Degradation of Formaldehyde over MnO2/CeO2 Hollow Spheres: Elucidating the Influence of Carbon Sphere Self-Sacrificing Templates

Abstract: Here, we prepare a MnO 2 /CeO 2 hollow sphere catalyst using the carbon sphere as a self-sacrificing template for formaldehyde (HCHO) removal. In the feed gas of 20 ppm of HCHO (balanced by N 2 ) + 20 vol % O 2 , a HCHO removal efficiency of 70% was achieved at 20 °C and full conversion was reached at around 47 °C at GHSV = 50,000 mL (g cat h) −1 for MnO 2 … Show more

“…Therefore, it can be speculated that the formation process of methyl is the decisive step in the reaction. After methane and oxygen were introduced together and kept for a few minutes, a brand-new signal peak appeared around 3260 cm –1 , which indicated an isolated hydroxyl group, , and maintained a high level for a long time. This isolated hydroxyl group, which is connected with the terminal metal and generated at the unsaturated coordination site, may be beneficial to the formation of methanol.…”

“…[23][24][25][26][27] Although little progress has been made in terms of synthesis and catalytic performance of CeO 2 -MnO x hollow nanospheres, the asobtained materials could not possess homogeneous structure, including uniform morphology, diameter, and interior architecture. 28,29 In this paper, we prepared well-dened CeMnO x hollow nanospheres with different amounts of MnO x by the combination of template method and interfacial reaction. Toluene was chosen as the target contaminant for catalytic oxidation.…”

“…7 Three typical synthesis methods of hollow spheres include hardtemplating methods, 8,9 soft-templating methods, 10 and template-free methods. 2 The hard-templating methods usually utilize "rigid" materials such as carbon spheres, 11 SiO 2 spheres, 12 gelatin spheres, 13 and so on as templates to prepare Co 3 O 4 @CdS, 14 Co 3 O 4 11 Ce 1−x Zr x O 2 , 15 and RuO 2 16 hollow spheres. The soft template methods typically involve the formation of relatively flexible structures, such as emulsion droplets, 17 supramolecular micelles, 18,19 and vesicles 20 as templates.…”
