Deglaciation of the Bara Basin near Malmö, Sweden

Abstract: Results obtained by mapping and special varved clay investigation show that the so-called Northeastern ice advance (13,500 B.P.) and the Low Baltic readvance (13.0W13.200 B.P.) are separated by a significant deglaciation phase, for which we propose ' Lockarp Interstadial' (13,200-13.500 B.P.) as a time-stratigraphic term to be used in the type area of southwestern Scania.

“…Therefore, any use of the new units in connection with the old unreliable ice-stream model will be confusing (cf. Duphorn et al 1979a). Different glacial episodes are here recommended to be named after the resulting deposits, e.g.…”

“…The deglaciation of the Oresund depression will be better understood after publication of Lagerlund's and Adrielsson's material (presented at the Deglaciation Symposium in Uppsala 1978). Of great importance also are stratigraphic studies of the clay deposits in the Bara basin just outside the Low Baltic till boundary in SW Scania (Duphorn et al 1979); these indicate that duration of the ice-readvance in this area was ca. 200 years.…”

“…Even though conflicting evidence as to the deglaciation pattern and the nature of till deposition around the end of the Middle Weichselian in Skåne does exist (cf. Berglund & Lagerlund 1981, Duphorn et al 1979) a tentative age determination is attempted. Berglund and Lagerlund (1981) related the Young Baltic advance and readvances to the deposition of the upper Baltic facies of the Dalby-Bråcke tills prior to 13300 BR Duphorn et al (1979) and Ringberg (1984) argued to the con-trary that the so called Low Baltic ice advance transgressed south-western Skåne after 13200 BP and deposited the younger (low-) Baltic till (Sunnanå Till, Ringberg 1984) from westerly directions and correlated this advance with the Baelthav advance.…”
