Deformation Behavior of Recycled Concrete Aggregate during Cyclic and Dynamic Loading Laboratory Tests

Abstract: Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is a relatively new construction material, whose applications can replace natural aggregates. To do so, extensive studies on its mechanical behavior and deformation characteristics are still necessary. RCA is currently used as a subbase material in the construction of roads, which are subject to high settlements due to traffic loading. The deformation characteristics of RCA must, therefore, be established to find the possible fatigue and damage behavior for this new material. … Show more

“…The infrastructure was one of the key areas where Poland was far behind Western Europe standards. Almost all the construction technologies were outdated, non-efficient, and in many cases unsafe for use [1][2][3]. Becoming open to new technologies and structural materials provided a strong impact for modernization of the entire construction industry, and until nowadays this trend is still being observed [4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Becoming open to new technologies and structural materials provided a strong impact for modernization of the entire construction industry, and until nowadays this trend is still being observed [4][5][6][7][8]. Lack of planning and poor economy management resulted in a huge production of waste, both municipal and industrial, which in many cases were deposited without any control [3][4][5]. The waste deposition became a serious issue, mainly in well-developed regions like Warsaw or Silesia, where the amount of by-products was rapidly increasing.…”

“…All specimens were characterized by the same moisture conditions, equal to optimum moisture content, as mentioned earlier. The compaction procedure was the same as defined by Proctor test [30]. The selected method is characterized by the use of a 2.5 kg hammer with diameter of 3.0 cm, lowered from a height of 10.0 cm to a large mold with volume of 2.2 dm 3 .…”

“…2017, 7, 741 3 of 22 compaction, crushing susceptibility, freeze thaw and triaxial tests [28] or long-term cyclic triaxial tests [29]. Nonetheless, studies on dynamic properties (shear modulus and damping ratio) of RCA are still very few [30].…”
