Defining Psychometric Variables Related to Use of Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract: With the goal of understanding autonomous vehicle (AV) adoption and use behavior, numerous behavioral studies and surveys have included variables intended to capture individuals’ perceptions of and attitudes toward AVs. However, the selection of questions to measure these psychometric variables appears to be ad hoc and, in many cases, arbitrary. In contrast, this study defines psychometric latent variables (LVs) that are related to the adoption and use of AVs and develops a set of questions to reliably measure… Show more

“…To have high-quality data, only the respondents with approval rates of 95% or higher on at least 100 previously completed MTurk tasks were qualified to take this survey. Although MTurk is widely used for data collection, the sample could be biased by MTurk respondents perhaps being younger, more educated, and more familiar with technology applications (29)(30)(31)(32)(33). The use of SP-RP analysis can help to reduce the impact of this bias on estimates, by bringing predicted market shares closer to actual market shares (25,28).…”

“…Table 1 shows the psychometric questions that were used as latent variable indicators. For more information on how these questions were selected, please refer to Ge et al ( 11 ) and Jabbari et al ( 10 ). Here, D is the unknown parameter that indicates the relationship between indicators and latent variables, and ζ i is a vector of measurement equation error terms that are normally distributed; Equation 15 connects utility to the choice indicator, y ijt ( 18 ).…”

“…In section three, API data were used as base values to generate personalized choice scenarios for the respondents. Finally, section four included the psychometric questions prioritized by Ge et al ( 11 ), which were later used to quantify latent variables such as safety perception toward AVs and car ownership importance.…”

“…Despite this extensive knowledge, there is a growing interest in understanding the psychometric drivers and fundamental values behind preferences for food (meat) labels. Psychometric factors seek to measure the mental process influencing behaviors and can be applied to estimate the effects of latent variables, which are unobservable but inferred from other observed metrics [ 27 ]. Meat demand differs from the demand for other types of food as it comes from a living creature raised and killed for human consumption.…”

“…The difficulty with measuring psychometric variables arises from the necessity to infer their influence through related observed variables [ 27 , 35 ]. SEM methods have been extensively used in consumer research for their ability to consider both direct and indirect effect pathways between latent and observed variables affecting behavioral outcomes [ 36 ], to gain deeper insight into consumer behavior towards pro-environmental and ethical goods [ 13 , 16 ] local foods [ 61 ], and the role of altruism behind the purchase of green packaging [ 62 ].…”
