Defining arthritis and measuring functional status in elders: methodological issues in the study of disease and physical disability.

Abstract: This study explores the degree to which the association of knee osteoarthritis with physical disability changes with different definitions of osteoarthritis in 1,416 Framingham Study elders. When all categories of radiographic osteoarthritis were aggregated into a single "arthritis" variable and dependence upon human assistance in one or more functional activities combined into a single variable, elders with osteoarthritis had only moderately increased odds for dependence after controlling for age or sex (OR =… Show more

“…The musculoskeletal conditions sarcopenia and OA have both been linked with increased risk of disability (21,22) and falls (10,11) in the aging population. The results from the present study indicate that pain may contribute further to disability and falls risk in women by exacerbating agerelated muscle strength and quality declines.…”

“…Kyphosis could also have a negative effect on visual exploration of the environment during street crossing because of the associated impairment of cervical mobility (Quek et al, 2013). Similarly, osteoarthritis, a common inflammatory joint disorder in older people, is associated with difficulty walking and climbing stairs, as well as a higher risk of falling (Guccione et al, 1990;Hanlon et al, 2002;Hochberg et al, 1995).…”
