Deep-Water Sharks, Rays, and Chimaeras of Brazil

Abstract: The deep-water fishery in Brazil is currently in expansion due to depletion of most neritic economic species. This increasing deep-water effort brings concern on the bycatch impact, its specific composition, the need for capture's evaluation and development of bycatch reduction devices. The impact is particularly aggressive on deep-water elasmobranchs, which have an extreme ecological k-strategy due to their reproductive constraints (lower fecundity and late first maturity age). Scientific deepwater surveys an… Show more

“…These fisheries have operated across the entire known geographical and bathymetrical range of Hydrolagus matallansi (e.g. Perez et al., 2013), where the species was caught in fisheries and by‐catch monitoring programmes (Rincon et al., 2017). Fishing activities mostly ceased in 2006 but may return at any point in the future due to the dynamic nature of Brazilian fisheries (Alvarez Perez et al., 2009).…”

“…More recently, Rincon et al . () reviewed the elasmobranch by‐catch from deep‐water fisheries in Brazil based on past experimental surveys and catches from chartered fishing vessels. Although these authors provided an extensive compilation of deep‐water elasmobranchs caught by bottom longline and gillnets, otter trawls and pot traps, information regarding C. coelolepis was limited only to its occurrence in otter trawls, with no further information regarding depth, area or frequency.…”
