Decrypting distributed ledger design—taxonomy, classification and blockchain community evaluation

Abstract: More than 1000 distributed ledger technology (DLT) systems raising $600 billion in investment in 2016 feature the unprecedented and disruptive potential of blockchain technology. A systematic and data-driven analysis, comparison and rigorous evaluation of the different design choices of distributed ledgers and their implications is a challenge. The rapidly evolving nature of the blockchain landscape hinders reaching a common understanding of the techno-socio-economic design space of distributed ledgers and the… Show more

“…Applying the supply and demand laws to the chemical models with several degrees of token involvement shows a series of decisions that the architect of a tokenised model has to take into account. These decisions (divisible or unit tokens and token-money or tokentoken exchange rates [45,46]) might be intuitive for experts in the field. However, careful token design (and awareness of the token design space [47]) is crucial to the success of the new system.…”

“…Each 'block' in the blockchain contains transaction records linked via cryptographic hashes, forming an immutable chain. This security aspect is crucial, as altering any recorded data requires changes across all subsequent blocks [18][19][20]. Blockchain's applications are diverse, including finance, supply chain management, healthcare, and more.…”

“…Different published taxonomies highlight infrastructural aspects of blockchain technology (Ballandies et al, 2021;Spychiger et al, 2021;Tasca & Tessone, 2019). Below, we delve into some blockchain infrastructure's core components and governance for this particular system (Pelt et al, 2021).…”
