at a dose of 100 mg/kg b.wt. inhibited the DNCB-induced overexpression of NFκ-B and iNOS in the colon. CONCLUSION:Curcumin treatment ameliorates colonic damage in DNCB-induced colitic rats, an effect associated with an improvement in intestinal oxidative stress and downregulation of colonic NFκ-B and iNOS expression. INTRODUCTIONInflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory disease caused by the inflammation and sores in the lining of large intestine and characterized clinically by recurrent episodes of bloody diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and histologically by mucosal inflammation and injury [1] . Conventional therapy for UC includes sulfasalazine and other 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) type of compounds, and in more persistent and/ or severe cases, oral, rectal and parenteral corticosteroids and immunosuppressants are administered [2] . All of these have significant toxicities and are partly or completely ineffective in significant numbers of patients [3] . Several agents used in the management of IBD, such as corticosteroids, sulfasalazine and 5-ASA, have documented regulation of Nuclear Factor K appa-B (NF κ-B) function [2] . Given the importance of inflammatory cell activation involved in the development of IBD, there is a need for a treatment modality against IBD that can block the inflammatory processes. OBJETIVO: A síndrome metabólica (SM) é um conjunto de fatores que favorecem o desenvolvimento de doenças cardiovasculares. Estudos prévios demonstram que os ácidos graxos poliinsaturados (PUFAs) podem melhorar alguns desses fatores. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito do óleo de peixe rico em PUFAs nos perfis glicêmico e lipídico, no estresse oxidativo e na capacidade antioxidante total (TRAP) no plasma em pacientes com SM. SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um ensaio clínico em 40 pacientes com SM (20 controles e 20 pacientes que consumiram 3 g/dia de PUFAs). RESULTADOS: O grupo que recebeu tratamento apresentou redução significativa nos níveis de triacilgliceróis e aumento no TRAP, mas sofreu aumento nos níveis de LDL, glicose e na resistência à insulina. CONCLUSÃO: Conclui-se que a ingestão de óleo de peixe foi capaz de diminuir os níveis de triacilgliceróis e aumentar o TRAP de pacientes com SM, porém verificou-se aumento nos níveis de LDL e na resistência à insulina.

-Context -Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are considered one of the most important causes of reactivation of inflammatory bowel disease. With regard to selective cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitors, the results are controversial in experimental colitis as well as in human studies. Objective -The aim this study is to compare nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs effects, selective and non selective cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitors, in experimental colitis and contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms which nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs provoke colitis exacerbation. Methods -Six groups of rats: without colitis, with colitis, and colitis treated with celecoxib, ketoprofen, indometacin or diclofenac. Survival rates, hemoglobin, plasmatic albumin, colonic tissue of interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, prostaglandin E2, catalase, superoxide dismutase, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, chemiluminescence induced by tert-butil hydroperoxides, and tissue and plasmatic leukotriene B4 were determined. Results -The groups treated with diclofenac or indometacin presented lower survival rates, hemoglobin and albumin, higher tissue and plasmatic leukotriene B4 and tissue superoxide dismutase than the group treated with celecoxib. Ketoprofen presented an intermediary behavior between diclofenac/indometacin and celecoxib, concerning to survival rate and albumin. The groups without colitis, with colitis and with colitis treated with celecoxib showed leukotriene B4 and superoxide dismutase lower levels than the groups treated with nonselective cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitors. Conclusions -Diclofenac and indometacin presented the highest degree of induced colitis exacerbation with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, celecoxib did not show colitis exacerbation, and ketoprofen presented an intermediary behavior between diclofenac/indometacin and celecoxib. These results suggest that leukotriene B4 and superoxide dismutase can be involved in the exacerbation of experimental colitis by nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. HEADINGS -Colitis.
