O objetivo deste artigo é caracterizar as internações hospitalares e associar suas ocorrências às Regiões Funcionais de Planejamento do estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. Este estudo caracteriza-se como observacional, analítico e transversal com a utilização de dados secundários, disponibilizados no site do Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS), referentes às hospitalizações na rede pública de saúde no período de janeiro a dezembro de 2019. Realizou-se uma análise descritiva e de correspondência para verificar a associação entre as variáveis (sexo, faixa etária, causa da hospitalização, óbito) e as regiões funcionais do estado. A maioria das hospitalizações ocorreu com pessoas do sexo feminino (55,1%), adultos (50,7%) e, principalmente, por morbidades ligadas a gravidez, parto e puerpério (14,3%), doenças do aparelho circulatório (12,0%) e doenças do aparelho respiratório (11,8%) e com 5,2% de óbitos. Estas variáveis também foram analisadas em função das regiões funcionais do estado. Houve diversidade na ocorrência das variáveis em relação às regiões. Com isso espera-se que esses resultados auxiliem na gestão da rede de atenção à saúde do RS favorecendo o planejamento de intervenções específicas por região que previnam ou reduzam a necessidade de internações.
