Methods for controlling leakage from water distribution systems vary with respect to cost and personnel requirements. The benefits of leakage reduction should be compared to the cost of alternative management options to determine which is the most cost effective. This study presents a new method for evaluating leakage from water distribution systems via combined cost benefit analysis (CBA) and uncertainty analysis. The case study considers four alternatives for leakage control. The results show that the inclusion of uncertainty analysis represents an improvement over traditional CBA where there is a high degree of uncertainty in the input data. Moreover, a clearer understanding of the available alternatives is obtained in situations where multiple alternatives show similar performances and there is no clear best choice. It was determined that in the case study distribution system, it is significantly more cost-effective to reduce leakage volumes by reactively repair broken pipes than to proactively replace them, despite large leakage losses. Partitioning a water distribution network (WDN) into smaller sub-networks (called district metered areas, or DMAs) is a strategy to manage its complexity. A number of requirements for WDN partitioning make existing graph partitioning techniques inefficient at finding a good solution. There are also other structural and hydraulic constraints, such as partition size, minimum nodes' elevation difference in partitions, and water velocity in pipes that make the identification of an efficient partitioning a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a technique called WDN-Cluster to solve this partitioning problem for gravitydriven water distribution networks. WDN-Cluster applies a combination of structural graph partitioning and multi-objective optimization based on NSGA-II to find a good arrangement of nodes into DMAs.

ResumoNo texto que se segue pretende-se, de uma forma sucinta, abordar a problemática do abastecimento doméstico de água e particularizada, em alguns casos, para a situação Portuguesa.Começa-se por uma abordagem histórica, passado depois para um enquadramento da modelação matemática dos sistemas hidráulicos, colocando particular enfase na formulação matemática dos sistemas quando orientados pela pressão (pressure-driven), no combate a fugas e nos indicadores de desempenho dos sistemas.São também referidas diferentes formulações para os modelos de qualidade. Referem-se brevemente os aspetos de importação, simplificação e calibração de modelos matemáticos, bem como aspetos do projeto e da gestão dos sistemas de distribuição, detalhando os problemas de gestão das perdas de água nestes sistemas. São brevemente referenciadas questões de fiabilidade, robustez e segurança de sistemas. Apresentam-se ainda, com algum detalhe, as questões relacionadas com a exploração e a avaliação técnica e de desempenho.Termina-se com algumas referências a aspetos de legislação e de regulamentação bem como de breves conclusões relacionadas com a "situação" dos sistemas de abastecimento de água em Portugal.Palavras-chave: modelação hidráulica, modelos orientados pelos consumos, modelos orientados pela pressão, perdas de água, localização de fugas, avaliação de desempenho técnico, indicadores de desempenho. AbstractIn this paper the problem of mathematical models of water supplying systems is focused and a particular attention is paid to the Portuguese situation. Starting with an historical approach and then developing in particular the solution of pressure driven systems, leakage control and technical performance evaluation and the corresponding indexes are presented. Brief references are also made to different formulations to water quality models. Aspects of importing, simplifying and calibration of mathematical models, as well as aspects of project and management of distribution systems are refereed, detailing the management problems of water losses in these systems. Issues of reliability, robustness and security of the systems are briefly referred. Aspects of exploration and technical evaluation and performance are also, in some detail, covered. Ends up with some references to aspects of law and regulation, as well as, brief conclusions concerning the "situation" of water supply systems in Portugal.
