Dechlorane Plus and its dechlorinated analogs from an e-waste recycling center in maternal serum and breast milk of women in Wenling, China

Abstract: a b s t r a c tWe measured Dechlorane Plus (DP) and its dechlorinated analogs in the blood and milk from women living in e-waste recycling sites in Wenling of Taizhou region, China (n ¼ 49). Both syn-DP and anti-DP were detected in all samples. Another compound, Cl 11 -DP, was detected in 45% and 84% of milk and serum samples, respectively. DP levels in blood and milk from residents living in the local environment >20 yrs (R 20 group) were significantly higher than those living in Taizhou <3 yrs (R 3 group) (p… Show more

“…Therefore, these two hypotheses are still needed to be confirmed. DP dechlorination products were commonly reported in biota including human tissues, the levels were generally much lower than those of DP (Ben et al, 2013;Chen et al, 2011Chen et al, , 2013aGuerra et al, 2011;Mo et al, 2013;Muñoz-Arnanz, et al, 2011Peng et al, 2012Peng et al, , 2014Sun et al, 2012;Yan et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2011b;Zheng et al, 2010Zheng et al, , 2014. However, an extremely high level was observed in a fresh water food web around DP facility in Huai'an, China, where the concentrations of anti-Cl 10 -DP and anti-Cl 11 -DP was 84.4 ng g −1 lw and 1030 ng g −1 lw, respectively .The dechlorinated products of DP in biota were mainly attributed to accumulation from the external habitat environment rather than internal metabolism, although the gender difference observed in some cases suggested that anti-Cl 11 -DP in the human body may be partly formed from in vivo dechlorination of the anti-isomer (Yan et al, 2012).…”

“…Chromatographic separation was usually achieved using capillary gas chromatography (GC) columns with a non-polar stationary phase, such as DB-5MS (De la Hoh et al, 2006;Jia et al, 2011;Ren et al, 2008;Zeng et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2013;Zheng et al, 2015a), DB-5HT (Muñoz-Arnanz et al, 2011), DB-XLB (Chen et al, 2013a(Chen et al, , 2013bMo et al, 2013;Yan et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2011b), CP-Sil 13 CB , VF-5MS (Peng et al, , 2014, Rxi-5MS (Qiu and Hites, 2008) and Rtx-1614 (Ben et al, 2013;Peverly et al, 2015). The 15 m and 30 m columns were generally selected.…”

“…In addition, Zheng et al 28 also found relatively higher DP concentration in human hair in e-waste recycling area as well as in indoor dust, suggesting that e-waste recycling activities could cause contamination of DP in the surrounding environment and that dust is one of the major pathways for DP exposure. Recently, Ben et al 29 investigated DP in the human blood and milk from Taizhou area, an e-waste recycling site in China and the results showed that DP levels in long-term residents of the local area (>20 years) were significantly higher than the others (<3 years). To our knowledge, there are no studies reporting on the human exposure to DP during DP manufacturing process.…”

“…5−8 Newborns will have been exposed to toxicants that could cross the placenta and will be further exposed through breastfeeding. DP and its analogs have recently been detected in human breast milk, 9,10 indicating that newborns will be exposed to DP postnatally. Although DP and its dechlorinated analogs have been found in bird eggs and the transfer of DP from mother to offspring has been studied in wildlife, 4,11,12 information on prenatal exposure to DP and its related compounds in humans is not available.…”
