Decapod crustaceans from the Paleocene (Danian) of the Paris Basin (Vigny stratotype and allied localities) and a limpet palaeoassociation

Abstract: As the lowermost stage of the Palaeogene, the Danian is a key period for ecosystems which followed the KÀPg boundary. The Vigny quarry (Val d'Oise, France) is a co-stratotype of the Danian stage, along with the well-known one of Fakse (Denmark). The Vigny ecosystem (Bois-des-Roches site at Vigny and allied Danian localities) is the only known Cenozoic reef of the Paris Basin and is formed by hermatypic corals, unlike reefs at Fakse. Well studied by scientists, including d'Orbigny, for almost two centuries, the… Show more

“…All datasets, morphological (Rathbun 1925;Garth 1958;Griffin & Tranter 1986), larval (Rice 1981(Rice , 1983(Rice , 1988 fig. 1), sup-port the Oregoniidae as the most basally branching majoid family.…”

“…In addition, Cope et al (2005) noted Paguristes johnsoni Rathbun, 1935, on the basis of a single, well-preserved propodus and an additional fragment of a carpus that were closely comparable to the type material illustrated and described by Rathbun (1935) from the Sucarnoochee Formation of Alabama (USA). Robin et al (2017) mentioned an indeterminate species of Paguristes Dana, 1851 from a privately held collection of Danian decapod crustaceans from Vigny, France. It would appear that this locality was very rich in paguroids of earliest Paleocene age (Wallaard et al, 2020), but unfortunately this material is not currently accessible for scientific assessment and publication.…”

“…Dromilites belli n. sp. is morphologically closest to the species Dromilites montenati Robin, Van Bakel, Pacaud, and Charbonnier, 2016 in showing comparable highly defined carapace regions with marked tubercles, but differs in displaying four anterolateral (instead of five) and one posterolateral teeth (instead of none), prominent tubercles on the posterior mesogastric region, a less defined urogastric region, a more carved cardiac region with a large central tubercle bearing two horizontally lined pits, epibranchial and mesobranchial regions bearing a single large tubercle (instead of two); and in having cervical and branchial grooves notching the lateral carapace margins less and more distinctly respectively. Dromilites belli n. sp.…”

“…Further to this observation, we herein study ancient and new specimens of Dromilites by providing good imaging and comment on the features and ontogenetic changes of different morphotypes. Quayle and Collins (1981), , Guinot et al (2013), and Robin et al (2016). Here we follow the nomenclatural resolution of these latter authors (Dromilites H. Milne Edwards in Bell, 1858).…”
