“…The fossil fauna from the El Chango quarry indicates that the palaeoenvironment was that of a shallow lagoon or an estuary, with occasional freshwater influences (Alvarado‐Ortega & Ovalles‐Damián 2008; Guinot et al . 2019).…”

“…Since then, this institution has been in charge of collecting, studying, and preserving the fossils from this Lagerstätte. Today, the fossil collection from the El Chango housed in this museum contains more than 400 fossils, including mollusks, crustaceans, ammonites, insects, plants, and fishes (Ovalles-Damián et al, 2006;Vega et al, 2007;Alvarado-Ortega et al, 2009;Than-Marchese, 2012, 2013;Amaral et al, 2013;Huerta-Vergara et al, 2013;Garassino et al, 2013;González-Ramírez et al, 2013;Guerrero-Márquez et al, 2013;Moreno-Bedmar et al, 2014;Carbot-Chanona, 2015;and Guinot et al, 2019;among others). Fishes are the best-preserved fossils at the El Chango; these are tightly laterally compressed, usually complete and articulated, and often show parts of soft tissues (muscles) and phosphatized stomach contents.…”

“…Conclusions based solely on the dorsal carapaces are speculative. But when, in a family, a Cretaceous specimen has fortunately been found with preserved ventral characters, it allows determining an associated carapace shape to the group, such as in the case of the Cenomanocarcinidae Guinot, Vega & Van Bakel, 2008 from the Early Cretaceous , which becomes a key to identifying allied taxa, differentiating between podotreme and non-podotreme (eubrachyuran) taxa and more accurately interpreting the correlated characters of the carapace.…”
