Decade of bio-inspired soft robots: a review

Abstract: Soft robotics is an emerging field of robotics that focuses on the design of soft machines and devices with effective human-machine interaction, high conformity, and environmental adaptability. The conventional robots made of hard materials have already achieved precision and accuracy, but they lack in reachability, adaptability, Degree of Freedom (DoF), and safe interaction. Moreover, soft robots mimic the behavior of biological creatures by mimicking their locomotive patterns. The actuation or the locomotion… Show more

“…According to Skardal et al remarkable improvement has been accomplished in the design and use of complex multi-organ on chip platform and body on a chip, in addition to the implementation of this organ on chip platform technology for drug efficacy and toxicity testing, personalized medicine and disease modeling ( Figure 1A ) ( Skardal et al, 2016 ). While discussing the possible uses of organ on chip platform technology in individualized and precision medicine, van den Berg et al also highlighted the use of machine learning techniques and timelapse microscopy for the development of organ on chip platform technology ( Bhatia and Ingber, 2014 ; Mencattini et al, 2019 ; Ahmed et al, 2022b ). A thorough assessment of the advancement in organ on chip platform research finds that “X-on-a-chip” (where “X" refers for a tissue or organ) proof-of-principle studies focused on duplicating a particular organ or tissue-like structure in vitro continue to dominate this technology’s state of art ( Polini and Moroni, 2021 ).…”

“…Rus and Tolley [8] discussed developments in the emerging field of soft robotics, inspired by a range of biological systems. Faheem Ahmed et al [10] provide a detailed overview of the development of soft robotics. A multi-material bio-inspired octopus robot for synchronous underwater swimming and a soft bioinspired frog robot (EXPOG) capable of synchronous underwater swimming were presented in [11,12].…”

“…A multi-material bio-inspired octopus robot for synchronous underwater swimming and a soft bioinspired frog robot (EXPOG) capable of synchronous underwater swimming were presented in [11,12]. A comprehensive survey of current research in biomimetic underwater robots and soft robots was presented by Wang et al [9,13]. It is supposed that biomimetic underwater vehicles will play an essential role in aquatic environment exploration and resource utilization.…”
