“…Consequently, according to the macroscopic and histological findings, we concluded that the cause of death was asphyxia resulting from airway obstruction caused by compression of the hematoma due to rupture of the artery and the severe edema of the larynx. In addition, it is generally accepted that a blow or a compression of the neck stimulating the carotid sinus can lead to circulatory collapse resulting from activation of an arterial baroreflex controlling the heart rate [20]. In the case herein described, as the locality of the neurofibroma and hemorrhage were closed to the carotid baroreflex, considering how quickly loss of consciousness occurred, we considered another possible mechanism of his sudden death could be cardiac inhibition induced by vagal stimulation.…”

“…Recientemente, una extensa revisión sobre muertes por reflejo cardioinhibitorio, llevada a cabo por Schrag, Vaucher, Bollman y Mangin [28,29], ha sentado las bases para exponer que no existe evidencia que sugiera que la sola estimulación carotídea pueda provocar la muerte. Sin embargo, el estímulo conduce a bradicardia y eventualmente, a síncope.…”

“…The authors of this paper provided an opinion that their work supported that 'the presumption that reflex cardiac arrhythmia due to carotid bifurcation stimulation cannot provoke death alone' . They went on, however, to suggest that the state of knowledge suggested that CiRCA might be a contributory factor to death in the presence of drug abuse and/or cardiac pathology, often when associated with physical and/or mental excitation (Schrag et al 2011).…”
