SUMMARYDuring the years 1952 to 1961, a total of 2561 cases of Rh‐isoimmunisation were recognised during pregnancy in Northumberland and Durham—an incidence of 6.7 per 1000 total births. 1802 of these infants were delivered in Newcastle hospitals, of whom 1544 were born alive. Approximately 60 per cent were treated by early exchange transfusion, the selection criterion being based on cord haemoglobin and bilirubin values. 1476 children survived. In order to study the sequelae of haemolytic disease in the newborn period, 300 children were selected for follow‐up at ages between seven and 14 years, including all surviving children who had been very severely affected and comparable numbers of those who had had severe, moderate or mild disease.Significant abnormalities were found in 32 children but in only 11 cases were these defects attributable to haemolytic disease: four had kernicterus and seven had severe sensorineural hearing loss. Because of the inclusion of all high‐risk patients in the sample of 300, these 11 children probably closely represent the total morbidity in all 1476 survivors.
