On 1 November 1517, Gaspar van Weerbeke, composer and native of Oudenaarde, was received as a canon at the church of St. Maria ad Gradus, the so-called Liebfrauenkirche, in the German city of Mainz. It is the last document relating to Gaspar that mentions his surname 'Weerbeke' . 1 The five-hundredth anniversary of this final documentation was the occasion for a symposium in Salzburg entitled 'Gaspar van Weerbeke: Works and Context' , held on 29 June-1 July 2017. This anniversary was the impetus for the present research on the details of Weerbeke's life. Most notably, during my research in the Oudenaarde city archives, I discovered a document that proves that Gaspar van Weerbeke was a member of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Walburga before 1470 and that he was a citizen of Oudenaarde. This discovery led to further research into the genealogy of the Weerbeke family and an investigation of the musical culture in Oudenaarde. To correctly evaluate the new data, I will start with an overview of the information on the composer and his works in the existing literature.
