DC power systems: Challenges and opportunities

Abstract: The ever increasing penetration depth of Distribution Energy Resources (DER) and the development of power electronics devices have a significant impact on the development of DC power transmission and distribution systems. This paper provides an overview of the recent advancement and also envisioned research and development on DC grids, with the objective of identification and discussion of the corresponding issues. Brief descriptions of DC grids at various voltage levels and their benefits are presented and di… Show more

“…There are few major hurdles such as large scale employment, regularization, and safety for DC systems which still need to be worked on in order to be accepted International Journal of Photoenergy in market [20]. Future PV systems connected to low-voltage DC grids are expected to be more effective in performance and support the entire grid [21].…”

“…Electromagnetic simulation is still served as a major method for DC grid analysis [21]. The transient issues in DC grids, such as the DC controllers and IGBTs, belong to small time-scales, which can only be simulated using electromagnetic programs.…”

“… Stable simulation can be achieved for the subsystems connected through TLI interface using the same time-steps for all subsystems, called a single rate, H. This means that the state transfer matrix in an equation, similar to (21), has the norms less than 1;  Each subsystem is asymptotically stable, which means that the A11 and A22 in (30) have norms less than 1;  Different simulation time-steps, which are not larger than the single rate H, are used for subsystems. Fast subsystems have small time-steps and slow subsystems have relatively large time-steps.…”

“…Lately, significant industrial and research studies in the topic of multi-terminal dc (MTDC) grid have been conducted all over the world [1]. From 1950 to 2015, around 180 two-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines have been put into operation around the world.…”
