DC negative corona discharge in atmospheric pressure helium: transition from the corona to the ‘normal’ glow regime

Abstract: Direct current (dc) negative corona discharges in atmospheric pressure helium are simulated via detailed numerical modeling. Simulations are conducted to characterize the discharges in atmospheric helium for a pin plate electrode configuration. A self-consistent two-dimensional hybrid model is developed to simulate the discharges and the model predictions are validated with experimental measurements. The discharge model considered consists of momentum and energy conservation equations for a multi-component (el… Show more

“…Atmospheric pressure discharges often have a high charge density, but in general, the whole atmosphere is an ionized gas that may be described by the physics of swarms. Of the plasmas, the corona discharge consists of streamers and diffuse discharge, which falls under the swarms jurisdiction . Calculation of transport of electrons, ions, and other particles may proceed mainly by using free electron and ion diffusion, but one needs to take into account clusters formed by water vapor molecules and other issues.…”

“…The charges build up on the needle and jump an air gap to a grounded dissimilar metal base plate. As the charges move through the air, they ionize the gases and produce a plasma [24]. A piezoelectric composite can then be added to this system between the needle and the base plate.…”
