DC and AC transport current measurements up to 140 A in melt-grown YBCO superconductors

Abstract: Transport currents of up to 140 A have been injected into melt-grown YBCO to measure AC and DC critical currents. Values of critical current densities of 16000 A cm-2 (zero field), 2000 A cm-2 (1 T) and 550 A cm-2 (5 T) were obtained at 77 K. The 50 Hz AC critical current densities are also reported, with values of 23000 A cm-2 and 12000 A cm-2 (RMS) in applied fields of 1 and 5 T respectively at 77 K. Silver contact pads enabled steady-state currents of up to 7000 A per cm2 of contact area to be injected into… Show more

“…The experimental results are in accordance with above analysis. In this paper, f 0 = 180 Hz, so if the YBCO-coated conductor operates at frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, according to (5), the novel criterion is 3-3.6 μV/cm. Generally, most of power applications of high-temperature superconductors operate at low frequency.…”

“…Therefore, the conventional criterion of E c = 10 −4 Vm −1 is no longer applicable. It was experimentally verified that the AC current capacity of YBCO-coated conductors was larger than DC critical current at 50 Hz, liquid nitrogen and 5 T [5]. Another approach was also put forward by obtaining the inflection point of logV − logI to define AC current capacity.…”

“…The best results are obtained in the MPMG samples with Ag doping and the repulsive force reaches 55N at a 1 mm gap, indicating that an object weighing 5.5 kg can be levitated at this height. Ag doping was effective in Z 40 - 10 20 Distance (mm)…”
