Non-marine carbonate rocks including cave, spring, stream, calcrete and lacustrine-palustrine sediments, are susceptible to early diagenetic processes. These can profoundly alter the carbonate fabric and affect paleoclimatic proxies. This review integrates recent insights into diagenesis of non-marine carbonates and in particular the variety of early diagenetic processes, and presents a conceptual framework to address them. With ability to study at smaller and smaller scales, down to nanometers, one can now observe diagenesis taking place the moment initial precipitates have formed, and continuing thereafter. Diagenesis may affect whole rocks, but it typically starts in nano-and micro-environments. The potential for diagenetic alteration depends on the reactivity of the initial precipitate, commonly being metastable phases like vaterite, Ca-oxalates, hydrous Mg-carbonates and aragonite with regard to the ambient fluid. Furthermore, organic compounds commonly play a crucial role in hosting these early transformations. Processes like neomorphism (inversion and recrystallization), cementation and replacement generally result in an overall coarsening of the fabric and homogenization of the wide range of complex, primary microtextures. If early diagenetic modifications are completed in a short time span compared to the (annual to millennial) time scale of interest, then recorded paleoenvironmental signals and trends could still acceptably reflect original, depositional conditions. However, even compact, non-marine carbonate deposits may behave locally and temporarily as open systems to crystal-fluid exchange and overprinting of one or more geochemical proxies is not unexpected. Looking to the future, relatively few studies have examined the behaviour of promising geochemical records, such as clumped isotope thermometry and (non-conventional) stable isotopes, in well-constrained diagenetic settings. Ongoing and future in-vitro and in-situ experimental approaches will help to investigate and detangle sequences of intermediate, diagenetic products, processes and controls, and to quantify rates of early diagenesis, bridging a gap between nanoscale, molecular lab studies and the fossil field rock record of non-marine carbonates.

IntroductionTravertine deposits located 24 km northwest of Karakoçan (Elazığ) and 60 km southwest of Mazgirt (Tunceli) (Figures 1a and 1b) are on the Karakoçan Fault Zone (KFZ) and Pamuklu Fault Zone (PFZ) and segments of the faults. The terms 'travertine' and 'carbonate tufa' are often used indiscriminately. 'Travertine' is frequently used to refer to carbonate rocks formed from thermal water deposits on the earth's surface, forming various deposit morphologies such as cascades, apron and channel travertines, fissure ridges, plateaus, and towers (Pedley, 2009;Pedley and Rogerson, 2010;Fouke, 2011). According to Andrews (2006) and Capezzuoli et al. (2014), tufas are terrestrial carbonates that form under surficial open-air conditions in streams, rivers, and lakes. Tufa is a product of physicochemical and microbiological biomediation processes. Because tufas form under exposure to light, they contain microbial (bacterial and cyanobacterial) and sometimes other algal components; many tufas encrust higher plants that live on the margins of streams, waterfalls, and wetlands (Pentecost et al., 1997). Tufa carbonates precipitate at ambient temperature from the calcium-bicarbonate waters derived from the dissolution of carbonate bedrock. Travertines are freshwater carbonates precipitated by organic or inorganic processes from the resources of calcium-and bicarbonaterich underground waters (Guo and Riding, 1998). Rapid travertine precipitation initiates when the CO 2 gas within the outcropping waters is emitted to the atmosphere. These freshwater carbonates have an internal structure that frequently changes laterally and vertically. Many conditions, such as differences in the lateral and vertical facies, the position of the resource, the base topography, fluctuations in the amount of the waters storing travertine, and changes in the flow rate and direction of water, organic activities, and surface waters, are frequently encountered in travertine fields due to seasonal climatic factors and tectonic zones. Topography plays a determinative role in the development of facies and in the storing of travertines. The climatic changes' influence on algal growth and travertine precipitation, besides tectonic settings, may produce a significant effect on depositional geometry of the hydrothermal travertine formation. ABSTRACTThe Gediz River, one of the principal rivers of Western Anatolia, has an extensive Pleistocene fluvial archive that potentially offers a unique window into fluvial system behaviour on the western margins of Asia during the Quaternary. In this paper we review our work on the Quaternary Gediz River Project (2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010) and present new data which leads to a revised stratigraphical model for the Early Pleistocene development of this fluvial system.In previous work we confirmed the preservation of eleven buried Early Pleistocene fluvial terraces of the Gediz River (designated GT11, the oldest and highest, to GT1, the youngest and lowest) which lie beneath the basalt-covered plateaux of the Kula Volcanic Province. Deciphering the information locked in this fluvial archive requires the construction of a robust geochronology. Fortunately, the Gediz archive provides ample opportunity for ageconstraint based upon age estimates derived from basaltic lava flows that repeatedly entered the palaeo-Gediz valley floors. In this paper we present, for the first time, our complete dataset of 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age estimates and associated palaeomagnetic measurements. These data, which can be directly related to the underlying fluvial deposits, provide age constraints critical to our understanding of this sequence.The new chronology establishes the onset of Quaternary volcanism at ~1320ka (MIS42). This volcanism, which is associated with GT6, confirms a pre-MIS42 age for terraces GT11-GT7. Evidence from the colluvial sequences directly overlying these early terraces suggests that they formed in response to hydrological and sediment budget changes forced by climatedriven vegetation change. The cyclic formation of terraces and their timing suggests they represent the obliquity-driven climate changes of the Early Pleistocene. By way of contrast the GT5-GT1 terrace sequence, constrained by a lava flow with an age estimate of ~1247ka, span the time-interval MIS42 -MIS38 and therefore do not match the frequency of climate change as previously suggested. The onset of volcanism breaks the simple linkage of terracing to climate-driven change.
