Background: The Phoenix dactylifera L. (date palm) is known for its traditional medicinal properties across the history of native population in Algerian Sahara. There is a large trend of consumption of date palm pollen preparations in many human infertility cases in our country. However, the validity has not been scientifically tested. There has been no direct scientific research on this application. This study was undertaken to identify cultivars with greater potential in the traditional medicine uses. To evaluate the effects of date palm pollen on some sexual behavioural parameters of male adult rats, we tested the role of pollen powder from Deglet Nour cultivar on some male reproductive parameters. Materials and Methods: An Ethnobotanical survey was conducted in 17 oases in southern Algeria to identify all cultivars with medicinal interest. Local people were interviewed with open questions. A questionnaire and personal interviews for data collection were designed to record important cultivars, parts used and preparations. To determine the active constituents of date palm pollen used in traditional medicine, a phytochemical screening was performed. The effects of oral administration of date palm pollen suspension on male adult rats were investigated on body and testicle weights, serum testosterone level. Results: 131 prominent cultivars were found within 12 cultivars containing various parts with medicinal effects. Some primary and secondary metabolites were detected by phytochemical screening. The pollen increased the weight of the body, testicles and enhanced the serum testosterone level of male rats treated. Conclusion:The present survey has provided the identification and recognition of date palm cultivars used in traditional Saharan medicine. Date palm pollen could improve sexual activities in male infertility cases and may be attempted to derive drugs.

Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 37(2): 89-100. The red palm weevil (RPW) is now a global threat, demanding a global strategy for its control and eventual eradication. In North Africa, RPW has been reported from all the countries except Algeria leaving several queries as to why this pest did not reach there. Enforcement of strict quarantine measures in the five Maghreb countries of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania kept the weevil at bay until 2008, but the region is today riddled with this dreaded pest with the exception of Algeria. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that strict regulatory regimes can restrict the spread and eventually eradicate the pest. The RPW-IPM program of Canary Islands in Spain where the RPW was effectively eradicated with no reports of weevil captures since 2016 is a classic example. Likewise, in Mauritania and Morocco quarantine laws did prevent the spread of the weevil, restricting it to the original foci of infestation. Ineffective quarantine regimes coupled with weak enforcement and difficulties in early detection of infested plants contributed to the rapid spread of RPW. Résumé -Les difficultés de commercialisation entravent le bon fonctionnement de la filière dattes en Algérie, particulièrement pour les cultivars à faible valeur marchande. Afin de tirer profit des expériences extérieures, et notamment de celles des agriculteurs des pays européens et des pays voisins (Maroc et Tunisie), de nombreux mécanismes et outils ont été introduits en Algérie. Nous montrons ici comment le recours à la production des dattes biologiques peut être un instrument d'amélioration de la commercialisation et de promotion des exportations des dattes algériennes, ainsi que de protection et de sauvegarde des palmeraies. Cette étude, basée sur des enquêtes de terrain, révèle que l'application des techniques de l'agriculture biologique à la phoeniciculture dans la région des Ziban, reste sous-exploitée et mal organisée, même si des résultats positifs sont enregistrés. Tous les indicateurs analysés demeurent peu intéressants jusqu'à maintenant et ce, en dépit des opportunités, nombreuses et encourageantes, qui pourraient être exploitées. En effet, le système de production de dattes biologiques ne pourra pas réussir sans la résolution de contraintes qui sont d'ordre technique, socioéconomique et de politique agricole.Mots clés : agriculture biologique / datte / Ziban / Algérie / contraintes / valorisation Abstract -Organic agriculture, a development tool for the date value chain in the Ziban region of Algeria. Difficulties in marketing hamper the smooth functioning of the date value chain in Algeria, especially for cultivars of low market value. In order to take advantage of the experiences of others, especially farmers from European countries and from neighboring countries (Morocco and Tunisia), many mechanisms and tools have been introduced in Algeria. In this work we show how the production of organic dates could be an instrument for improving marketing and exporting of Algerian dates, and for protecting and preserving palm groves. This study is based on field surveys. It shows that the use of organic practices in date palm cultivation in the Ziban region remains under-exploited and unorganized, although the positive results recorded. Nevertheless, all the analyzed indicators remain poor to date, despite the many and encouraging opportunities that could be exploited. Date palm organic farming will indeed not be successful without coping with the existing technical, socio-economic and political constraints.
