Abstract: International audienceA series of 36 radiocarbon AMS ages produced from separate bone fragments has prompted a new appraisal of the archaeological sequence of the Rond-du-Barry Cave (Polignac, Haute-Loire). A huge rock-fall of unknown age underlies Unit H, which which contains evidence of the oldest human occupation of the site consisting of a Middle Palaeolithic assemblage dated to between 40 and 33 kyr. The first Upper Palaeolithic occupation of the Cave occurred later. In Unit F, three Badegoulian occupatio… Show more

“…During the next three millennia (between ~26.5 ka and 23.5 ka), mammoths expanded farther west and north through Germany (Binningen, Hartwald: De Jong et al, 2011) to England (Paviland Cave: Aldhouse-Green and Pettitt, 1998; but see Jacobi and Higham, 2008) and reached most probably even Ireland (Castlepook Cave: Woodman et al, 1997). Southwest expansion took place using mainly migration corridors in the northern outskirts of the Alps via Switzerland (e.g., Hünwagen, Wil, Mellikon: Kock et al, 2009; Huber and Reinhard, 2016) and Massif Central (e.g., Rond-du-Bary: Raynal et al, 2014) to Cantabria (Pámanes, Cueto de la Mina: Álvarez-Lao and Garcia, 2012). Wide distribution of mammoths during that time is accompanied by the decline in number of records with a local minimum around 26.5 ka BP (Fig.…”

“…or have lithic industries that have not been recently described or analyzed. Recent studies (Ducasse et al, 2017(Ducasse et al, , 2014aRaynal et al, 2014a) demonstrate the importance of such analyses and their archaeological implications. By incorporating into age-models 14 C measurements from sites that have not undergone such critical examinations, one may unwittingly include ages that do not have reliable archeological associations-i.e., ages that may not be dating the cultural occupation to which they were originally attributed.…”
