Dataflow machine architecture

Abstract: Dataflow machines are programmable computers of which the hardware is optimized for fine-grain data-driven parallel computation. The principles and complications of datadriven execution are explained, as well as the advantages and costs of fine-grain parallelism. A general model for a dataflow machine is presented and the major design options are discussed. Most dataflow machines described in the literature are surveyed on the basis of this model and ita associated technology. For general-purpose computing the … Show more

“…MDF is one of several large grain data flow models [1][3] that expand on traditional data flow [22]. The salient features of MDF are that it incorporates the notion of state, adds the ability to dynamically create graphs, and provides coarse grained actors.…”

“…Unlike dynamic model, there is disadvantage of the static dataflow computer architecture in impossibility to use dynamic forms of parallelism, including loops and recursion. Dynamic data flow model allows dynamic forms of parallelism, both loop and recursive, that appear in the time of program execution [1,2,3,4,5,6,7].…”

“…Dynamic dataflow machines allow, in contrast to static dataflow machines, multiple tokens per arc. This can be achieved by either code-copying or tagged tokens, for more details, see [87]. Dynamic dataflow machines potentially provide the highest level of parallelism [87].…”
