Data science and its relationship to library and information science: a content analysis

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the results of a study exploring the emerging field of data science from the library and information science (LIS) perspective.Design/methodology/approachContent analysis of research publications on data science was made of papers published in the Web of Science database to identify the main themes discussed in the publications from the LIS perspective.FindingsA content analysis of 80 publications is presented. The articles belonged to the six broad categories: da… Show more

“…DS is multi‐ and interdisciplinary in nature (Cao, 2017; Raban & Gordon, 2020). Many disciplines have started to establish a disciplinary identity in the DS research and education landscape, including LIS (Shah et al, 2021; Virkus & Garoufallou, 2019, 2020). Our analysis of DS job advertisements found 200+ subject domain areas in the degree requirement specifications, reflecting market need for a broad range of DS education programs at all levels.…”

“…Data librarians need core competencies and skills to perform data-related tasks (Wang and Fong, 2015; Robinson and Bawden, 2017; Semeler et al , 2020). Researchers suggest that LIS schools should integrate data science courses into LIS programs (Virkus and Garoufallou, 2020). Some other potential roles for LIS professionals have also been identified, including data curation, artificial tool acquisition, data and visual literacy (Cox et al , 2019b), cloud computing and discovery services (Sawant and Yadav, 2020).…”
