Passage retrieval (already operational for lawyers) has advantages in output form over reference retrieval and is economically feasible. Previous experiments in passage retrieval for scientists have demonstrated recall and false retrieval rates as good or better than those of present reference retrieval services. The present experiment involved a greater variety of forms of retrieval question. In addition, search words were selected independently by two different people for each retrieval question. The search words selected, in combination with the computer procedures used for passage retrieval, produced average recall ratios of 72 and 67%, respectively, for the two selectors. The false retrieval rates were (except for one predictably difficult question) respectively 13 and 10 falsely retrieved sentences per answer-paper retrieved.

EinfuhrungWenn man sich auf die Suche nach Fachliteratur begibt, in der ein bestimmtes Thema abgehandelt ist, dann muI3 man sich ein Schlagwort fur dieses Thema uberlegen oder mehrere von ihnen. Man hofft, unter einem solchen Schlagwort im Register zweckdienliche Literaturhinweise zu finden, oder man benutzt diese Schlagworter als Suchauftrag fur einen mechanisierten Speicher, in welchem Fachliteratur zugriffsbereit gesammelt ist.Fur den Literatursuchenden bedeutet es immer eine Erleichterung, wenn er diese Schlagworter der vertrauten Fachsprache entnehmen kann, ohne daB er einschrankende Regelungen beriicksichtigen muB. Dies ist bei den Registern und auch bei vielen computerisierten Speichern mdglich. Eine kunstsprachliche -oder genauer gesagt ,,indexsprachliche" -Ausdrucksweise ist beim Literatursuchenden hingegen nur wenig beliebt. Man kennt sie beispielsweise von einigen Bibliotheksklassifikationen und computerisierten Informationsspeichern her. Sie mu0 fur den Suchzweck immer eigens erlernt und auch laufend geubt werden.

In any literature search one must be able to predict which modes of expression have been used to represent the concepts of interest in the search file. It is these lingual expressions which will be looked up or will constitute the search parameters in a mechanized search. In the case of general concepts and statements, uncontrolled natural language lacks the required representational predictability, as is demonstrated, for example, for classes of chemical compounds and for types of reactions. Hence, considerable loss of relevant information is bound to occur in searches for these concepts in free text files, regardless of how advanced a computer program may be. By restricting the modes of expression as is achieved by means of an indexing language and its reliable employment, predicability is increased and, consequently, information loss is drastically reduced.-In contrast, the modes of expression for indiuidual concepts (e. g . individual chemical substances, authors, institutions) are, by their very nature, often sufficiently predictable in uncontrolled natural language.
