Globally, Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) have a high market demand owing to their increased nutritional value. Crassostrea gigas can be a dietary source to meet the daily nutritional needs. Several studies have evaluated the nutritional value and bioactivity of C. gigas. However, a review of studies examining the nutritional value and bioactivity of C. gigas has not been previously performed. This study aimed to review the studies evaluating the nutritional value and bioactivities of C. gigas components using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The online databases Web of Science, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE and PubMed were searched to retrieve published studies on the nutritional value and bioactivity of C. gigas. Among the 37 studies obtained after filtering, the highest number of studies evaluated other bioactivities of C. gigas, followed by studies evaluating the antioxidant activity. This review examined the C. gigas components, including protein, moisture, glycogen, minerals, essential amino acids and fatty acids, which exerted beneficial effects on human health. Environmental conditions and cultivation techniques influenced the nutritional contents of C. gigas. The bioactive components of C. gigas exhibited antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and anticancer, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, hypoglycaemic, skin whitening, skin immunomodulatory, antiwrinkle, cholesterol-lowering, antiaudiogenic seizure and probiotic activities. In conclusion, C. gigas has a high nutritional value and comprises various bioactive components. Thus, C. gigas can be a source of bioactive components and a functional food. However, most studies evaluating the bioactivity of C. gigas were performed in vitro.

This study investigated the effect of heavy metals on the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata from 5 sites along the coast of Alexandria, with focus on its ecological health and potential risks to human consumption. Pollution results showed that Abu-Qir had the highest Cu and Cd values. Montaza and Eastern Harbor had the highest Fe and Pb values, respectively. Statistically, differences in metal concentrations among study sites were significant (p < 0.05). Non-carcinogenic risk (TTHQ) of tested metals and carcinogenic ones of Cd and Pb showed “high risk” on human health by consuming pearl oysters. Morphometric measurements and condition indices were studied to assess growth patterns and health in relation to heavy metals exposure. Key findings showed detectable declines in size and condition index in Eastern Harbor, whereas Abu-Qir recorded the highest values. This condition index performance presented Abu-Qir, Mammora, and Miami as ideal locations for spat collection and oyster rearing, potentially enhancing Egyptian pearl farming. Average values of spatial proximate contents of pearl oyster showed that it was rich in proteins (33.07–58.52%) with low fat content (1.39–1.87%) and carbohydrates (9.72–17.63%). Biochemical composition of pearl oyster demonstrated its high nutritional value which supported its promotion as a functional food for human consumption. The calorie content of pearl oyster was less than 2 Kcal, making this species an alternative source of healthy food to reduce obesity. Regression analysis indicated that Cu, Cd, and Pb had significant effect on 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, calories, vitamins, and pigment content of the collected oysters.

Oyster and mussel farming along the coasts and the desire to increase fishing revenue have created a boom in these types of farms. An experiment on culture of edible oyster (Saccostrea cucullata) and green mussel (Perna viridis) was performed at Gangamoti estuary in Kuakata, Bay of Bengal coast of Bangladesh from December 2021 to March 2022 to find out the appropriate culture method of the oyster, S. cucullata and green mussel, P. viridis. Initially, the average shell heights of S. cucullata and P. viridis were 8.8±1.62 and 6.9±1.89 cm, respectively; where average weights were153.4±13.23 and 84.78±11.78 g, respectively. After the culture period, oysters shell height and weight grew up to 9.1±1.98 cm and 163.2±12.54 g, respectively in rectangular basket and 8.9±1.45 cm and 157.2±11.31 g, respectively in velon screen bag. In case of oysters, the rectangular basket and velon screen bag displayed the minor progress in specific growth rate, 0.09±0.01 and 0.07±0.03, respectively. But green mussels did not show any growth rate. Oysters cultured in rectangular basket showed total mortality at day-90 and velon screen bag at day-75. Green mussels showed 100% mortality within 21 days of culture. Our experiment was the first attempt to culture these two mollusks in the Kuakata coast of Bangladesh. However, further intensive researches would be required to evaluate the culture feasibility of these two mollusks’ species in the Kuakata coast of Bangladesh.
