Data on 30-year stand dynamics in an old-growth broad-leaved forest in the Kaluzhskie Zaseki State Nature Reserve, Russia

Abstract: The article provides primary data on repeated tree measurements collected during two censuses on a permanent sampling plot (440 m × 200 m) established in the old-growth polydominant broad-leaved forest in the Kaluzhskie Zaseki State Nature Reserve (centre of European Russia). The time span between the inventories was 30 years, and a total of 11 578 individuals of ten tree, one shrub species, and several undefined tree species of three known genera were registered. During the surveys, tree identity, stem diamet… Show more

“…With its vast territory and high diversity of natural habitats, Russia faces enormous challenges in its efforts to conserve its entomofauna [20]. The most obvious problem is the lack of basic information on the status and abundance trends of all insect species [20,21], except for a few well-studied groups [22,23]. There is thus an ongoing need to document and understand changes in insect abundance and distribution data [24,25].…”

“…In recent decades, a confluence of factors, including climate change, increased anthropogenic activities, urbanization, and catastrophic events such as fires, droughts, and floods, alongside the proliferation of invasive species, has caused notable changes in the processes of natural ecosystems [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. These transformative processes disrupt historically balanced undisturbed ecosystems, leading to a perturbation in ecological equilibrium conducive to the proliferation of pests and a subsequent surge in their populations.…”

“…Of particular importance to protected areas is the study of their biodiversity ( Minin et al 2020 , Wangmo et al 2021 , Shashkov et al 2022 ). A key challenge for understanding current drivers of biodiversity loss and conservation effectiveness is the relatively slow rate of biodiversity assessment.…”
