Abstract: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a necrotizing and ulcerative skin disease of unknown cause. The pathogenesis is thought to be related to a defective immune response. The ulcerations appear spontaneously or after skin trauma. Development in a surgical wound can be misinterpreted as wound infection. However, in contrast to postoperative infections, treatment of PG requires immunosuppressive therapy. We report a case of PG following hip-joint surgery that was complicated by a severe life-threatening systemic inflamm… Show more

“…Antibiotics, surgical debridement, vacuum aspiration and skin-grafting treatment were given which may delay treatment, extended treatment time and costs, and even lead to secondary infection. Dozens of cases at home and abroad like this [2], [5], [6], [7].

“…Solidorgan malignancy [3], Sweet syndrome [7], and various chronic conditions, such as viral hepatitis and HIV infection [2], also appear to be associated with pyoderma gangrenosum. Pyoderma gangrenosum complicating a caesarian-section wound in a patient without any of the associated systemic diseases has been described [8], as have a case that occurred after hip joint surgery [9], a case complicating reduction mammoplasty [10], a case complicating spinal surgery [11], and a further case complicating coronary artery bypass grafting [12]. This association with surgery is referred to as "pathergy.…”
