DAS over 1,007-km Hybrid Link with 10-Tb/s DP-16QAM Co-propagation using Frequency-Diverse Chirped Pulses

Abstract: We report the first distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) results over >1,000 km on a field-lab hybrid link using chirped-pulses with correlation detection and 20× frequency-diversity, achieving a sensitivity of 100 p ∈ / Hz at 20-meters spatial resolution.

“…Although the sensing distance of Φ-OTDR is generally limited to a few tens of kilometres, it offers remarkable advantages of high sensitivity, high accuracy, fast response, and fully distributed measurements. Thus, Φ-OTDR has been used to exploit more functionalities for fibre-optic network 25,33,34,[38][39][40][41] . Initially, Φ-OTDR only utilized dedicated or idle undersea fibre cables as the sensing medium to detect seismic waves 20,33,34 .…”

“…Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR) has garnered significant attention in academic and industrial fields in recent years, with the outstanding advantage of long-distance and large-scale sensing for acoustic waves and vibrations. Notably, substantial advancements have been achieved in enhancing sensor performance, particularly in the sensing distance, 1 sensitivity, 2 spatial resolution, 3 , 4 and so on.…”

“…There are two technical strategies summarized to improve the SNR of ϕ-OTDR system: (1) improve the backscattered signal power and (2) decrease the system noise power. There have been many studies focusing on boosting the backscattered light power, and various methods have been explored, such as pulse compression through pulse-coding 6 or nonlinear/linear frequency modulated (LFM) pulses, 7 , 8 distributed amplification 9 , 10 or multi-span online amplification, 1 , 11 enhanced backscattering fiber, 12 and more.…”
