“…This may be due to the fact that 24.1% developed CP during follow-up [31]; most of these patients died during follow-up; some of them died of CP alone (7.9%). In a previous study [31], we found that the mortality for patients who developed CP after AP was 2.7 times higher than the mortality in patients who did not develop CP, and 5.3-6.5 times higher than the mortality in the background population. In addition, 37% of the AP patients had a high alcohol intake and, therefore, a high risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis, which 5.5% of the patients died from compared with 1.6% of the total Danish population.…”

“…In addition, patients with chronic pancreatitis constitute a high-risk group for ordinary-type pancreatic cancer [73][74][75]. Although clear evidence for testing is lacking, many patients with chronic pancreatitis lead a lifestyle associated with carcinogenic risks (alcohol drinking and/or smoking), and it is useful to perform cancer screening [65,[76][77][78][79][80][81].…”

“…In contrast to AP [2], few population-based data are available for CP [3,4,5,6,7]. Population-based US estimates for CP have been reported for the city of Rochester, Minn., USA (1940–1969) [8] and, Olmsted County, Minn., USA (1977–2006) [9] as well as the number of admissions to US non-federal acute care hospitals (1988–2004) [10].…”
