Dancing beyond exercise: young people's experiences in dance classes

Abstract: Although physical inactivity contributes substantially to the so-called obesity epidemic, public health programs have had limited success in increasing activity. “…When the significance in flexibility and balance values of the students who did not do dancing exercises was examined, it was observed that there were decreases from (19.32±10.19) (pre-test) to (9.07±0.76) (post-test) in flexibility and from (4.12 ± 4.13) (pre-test) to (3.47 ± 3.36) (post-test) in balance (Table 2). In the study of Gardner et al (2009) it was pointed out that dance encourages physical activity and contributes to wish to live healthily to a great extent. A study of young dance students ranging in ages 14 to 26 from different dance backgrounds was conducted to find out experiences of dance students and motivations for attending dance classes (Gardner, Komesaroff, & Fensham, 2008).
