Damping Rotating Grid SINS Based on a Kalman Filter for Shipborne Application

Abstract: The measurement error of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) significantly affects the navigation accuracy of the grid strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) applied in polar regions. In this paper, the single-axis rotation modulation grid SINS is designed to suppress the navigation error caused by IMU constant error. Then on the basis of rotation modulation scheme, a novel external horizontal damping algorithm based on a Kalman filter is conducted to further suppress the 84.4 min Schuler oscillation cau… Show more

“…The ECEF frame does not have any specific points in the near-Earth space [2] .However, it relies on auxiliary sensors such as satellites. The grid frame can be used for navigation in the polar regions and is convenient to apply the damping algorithm [3] , but the calculation is complicated. The transversal frame has the advantages of simple calculation and easy application of damping algorithms [4] .…”

“…Different rotation schemes are designed to minimize systematic errors. Various rotation modulation schemes designed for fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) have strong reference significance for MEMS inertial navigation [ 16 , 17 ]. However, compared with the fiber optic gyroscope, the MEMS sensor has a larger constant error and larger noise, and the error component is more complex [ 18 ].…”

“…Through the foundation of the observation equation in both the internal damping state and the external damping state, the convergence time of Earth oscillation errors is shortened compared to the conventional damping method. In Reference [15], Kalman filter is applied in external horizontal damping algorithm for the shipborne grid SINS. It focuses on the influence of the constant error of Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) within the navigation solution and gives a brief criterion of the state switching based on the difference of the observations between two adjacent moments changes.…”
