Damage Identification of Large Generator Stator Insulation Based on PZT Sensor Systems and Hybrid Features of Lamb Waves

Abstract: Large generators are the principal pieces of equipment in power systems, and their operation reliability critically depends on the stator insulation. Damages in stator insulation will gradually lead to the failure and breakdown of generator. Due to the advantages of Lamb waves in Structural health monitoring (SHM), in this study, a distributed piezoelectric (PZT) sensor system and hybrid features of the Lamb waves are introduced to identify stator insulation damage of large generator. A hierarchical probabilit… Show more

“…Other works have focused on improvements in the process of identifying damages in structures. For instance, Li et al [94] used the propagation of Lamb waves in isotropic materials to analyze the probability damage imaging (PDI) to improve the location and identification of damages in these materials.…”

“…There are mainly three types of sensors in the aforementioned or other researches used in WIM systems: strain sensor [8,13], piezoelectric sensor [4], and quartz sensor [18]. Among the available sensors, piezoelectric sensors have been attracting increasing interests due to their ability of self-powering and fast response to impact loadings [19][20][21][22][23], and, hence, have been widely applied in health monitoring systems for infrastructures [24][25][26][27]. Tang et al [28] used integrated Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT) sensors for comprehensive structural health monitoring.…”

“…To locate the damage in a stator insulation structure, it is important to accurately extract the time of flight (TOF) features of the Lamb wave [ 9 , 16 ]. The multi-mode and dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves during propagation can hinder the extraction of TOF features.…”
