“…Kanner and colleagues found that daily hassles predicted current and subsequent psychological symptoms, such as, depression and anxiety, more accurately than significant negative life events (Kanner et al, 1981). Later empirical work has also found that stress sensitivity to daily hassles was significantly associated with, dissatisfaction with current life circumstances (Lavee & Ben-Ari, 2008), marital problems (Harper, Schaalje & Sandberg, 2000), reactive cocaine use in individuals with cocaine dependency (Waldrop et al, 2007) and, importantly, the wish to die in older adults (Boyer et al, 2012) and heightened stress-sensitivity in people with bipolar disorder with more frequent depressive episodes (Havermans & Nicolson, 2007). The current finding points towards the need to assess the individual"s interpretation or personal meaning attached to more 'every day' events and formulating strategies to help people cope with the impact of such events.…”

“…These stressed couples are likely to have an unusually high rate of conflict, as stress is negatively associated with relationship quality (e.g., Harper, Schaalje, & Sandberg, 2000;Totenhagen, Butler, & Ridley, 2012) and partners' abilities to have quality interactions with one another (Gordon & Chen, 2013;Neff & Karney, 2009), making them especially suitable for examining the occurrence of daily conflicts that are normally rather rare (e.g., Kennedy et al, 2002;McGonagle et al, 1992). As described below, we expect the nonstressed member of the couple to show a clearer pattern of results, as the stressed members of the couples are likely to be preoccupied with the external stressor rather than attending to relational processes.…”

“…Although happiness or satisfaction is sometimes conceptualized as synonymous with relationship quality (Harper et al, 2000;Otis, Rostosky, Riggle, & Hamrin, 2006), we acknowledge other aspects of relationship quality as well. Closeness, or a sense of ''we-ness,'' is an important part of the process by which stress may impact a relationship in that daily stress can decrease shared experiences and closeness for couples (Bodenmann, 2005).…”

“…Much of the research on stress and relationships, however, has examined relationship quality/ satisfaction in a more general sense (Harper et al, 2000;Totenhagen & Curran, 2011), although daily stress is thought to decrease closeness in couples given decreased shared experiences (Bodenmann, 2005). Thus, a question remains about whether sacrifices and hassles explain different types of daily relationship quality.…”
