In this paper, we focus on the problem of locating a scuba diver in distress using a sensor network. Without GPS reception, submerged divers in distress will transmit SOS messages using underwater acoustic communication. The study goal is to enable the quick and reliable location of a diver in distress by his fellow scuba divers. To this purpose, we propose a distributed scheme that relies on the propagation delay information of these acoustic SOS messages in the scuba divers’ network to yield a range and bearing evaluation to the diver in distress by any neighboring diver. We formalize the task as a non-convex, multi-objective graph localization constraint optimization problem. The solution finds the best configuration of the nodes’ graph under constraints in the form of upper and lower bounds derived from the inter-connections between the graph nodes/divers. Considering the need to rapidly propagate the SOS information, we flood the network with the SOS packet, while also using rateless coding to leverage information from colliding packets, and to utilize time instances when collisions occur for propagation delay evaluation. Numerical results show a localization accuracy on the order of a few meters, which contributes to quickly locating the diver in distress. Similar results were demonstrated in a controlled experiment in a water tank, and by playback data from a sea experiment for five network topologies.

Nowadays, the increasing availability of commercial off-the-shelf underwater acoustic and non-acoustic (e.g., optical and electromagnetic) modems that can be employed for both short-range broadband and long-range low-rate communication, the increasing level of autonomy of underwater vehicles, and the refinement of their underwater navigation systems pave the way for several new applications, such as data muling from underwater sensor networks and the transmission of real-time video streams underwater. In addition, these new developments inspired many companies to start designing hybrid wireless-driven underwater vehicles specifically tailored for off-shore operations and that are able to behave either as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), depending on both the type of mission they are required to perform and the limitations imposed by underwater communication channels. In this paper, we evaluate the actual quality of service (QoS) achievable with an underwater wireless-piloted vehicle, addressing the realistic aspects found in the underwater domain, first reviewing the current state-of-the-art of communication technologies and then proposing the list of application streams needed for control of the underwater vehicle, grouping them in different working modes according to the level of autonomy required by the off-shore mission. The proposed system is finally evaluated by employing the DESERT Underwater simulation framework by specifically analyzing the QoS that can be provided to each application stream when using a multimodal underwater communication system specifically designed to support different traffic-based QoSs. Both the analysis and the results show that changes in the underwater environment have a strong impact on the range and on the stability of the communication link.

While acoustic communications are still considered the most prominent technology to communicate under water, other technologies are being developed based, e.g., on optical and radio-frequency electromagnetic waves. Each technology has its own advantages and drawbacks: for example, acoustic signals achieve long communication ranges at order-of-kbit/s rates, whereas optical signals offer order-of-Mbit/s transmission rates, but only over short ranges. Such a diversity can be leveraged by multimodal systems, which integrate different technologies and provide the intelligence required to decide which one should be used at any given time. In this paper, we address a fundamental part of this intelligence by proposing Optimal Multimodal Routing (OMR), a novel routing protocol for underwater networks of multimodal nodes. OMR makes distributed decisions about the flow in each link and over each technology at any given time, in order to advance a packet towards its destination; in doing so, it prevents bottlenecks and allocates resources fairly to different nodes. We analyze the performance of OMR via simulations and in a field experiment. The results show that OMR successfully leverages all technologies to deliver data, even in the presence of imperfect topology information. To permit the reproduction of our results, we share our simulation code.
