“…Heinem.) (Agaricaceae family), known in Brazil as "Cogumelo-do-sol" and worldwide as "sun mushroom" or "Himematsutake", has been largely cultivated in Brazil because of its medicinal properties (Machado et al, 2005;Faccin et al, 2007). Strains of this species were exported to Japan from Brazil in 1965, and their fruiting bodies have been used as medicines in Japan and many other countries (Mizuno et al, 1999;Talcott et al, 2007).…”

“…The antiproliferative effect of Agaricus mycelium has been described in other investigations, demonstrating protective effects against genetic damage (Barbisan et al, 2003;Bellini et al, 2006;Delmanto et al, 2001;Luiz, Jordao, Eira, Ribeiro, & Mantovani, 2003;Machado, Filho, Terezan, Ribeiro, & Mantovani, 2005;Martins, Jordao, Ribeiro, Ferreira, & Mantovani, 2002) and inhibitory effects on tumour cell growth, cell migration or tumour-induced neovascularisation by mushroom (Kimura, Kido, Takaku, Sumiyoshi, & Baba, 2004;Kobayashi et al, 2005;Takaku, Kimura, & Okuda, 2001). Regarding this, Kawamura and Kasai (2007) reported that hemicellulase-treated A. blazei showed a strong antiproliferative effect and induced p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase-mediated cell growth delay and apoptosis in some cell lines.…”

“…Various A. blazei extracts obtained using different solvents have been evaluated and the protective potential of compounds present in these extracts has been the subject of much published research, some by our group (Delmanto et al, 2001;Menoli et al, 2001;Luiz et al, 2003a;Machado et al, 2005;Bellini et al, 2006) and some by other researchers (Sorimachi et al, 2001;Kasai et al, 2004).…”

“…We have also used CHO-K1 cells and a chromosomal aberration test to assess a 3:1 chloroform/methanol A. blazei extract and found that when the extract was present at a concentration of 0.83% there was a significant decrease in mitotic index (Luiz et al, 2003a). We have tested sub-fractions of an hexanic extract of A. blazei and found differences in genotoxicity and cytotoxicity between the extracts (Machado et al, 2005). We also tested different A. blazeiorganic extracts (hexanic, methanolic and n-butanolic) using an in vitro chromosome aberration test and found anticlastogenicity activity but when a metabolic cell lineage and the CBMN assay was used we observed that the n-butanolic extract produced genotoxic effects (Bellini et al, 2006).…”
