Cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity of 5-(2,4-dimethylbenzyl)pyrrolidin-2-one extracted from marine Streptomyces VITSVK5 spp.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity of 5-(2,4-dimethylbenzyl)pyrrolidin-2-one (DMBPO) extracted from marine Streptomyces VITSVK5 spp. The strain was isolated from sediment samples collected at the Marakkanam coast of Bay of Bengal, India. Systematic screening of isolates for anti-Aspergillus activity resulted in the identification of Streptomyces species designated as Streptomyces VITSVK5 spp. Bioactivity guided extraction and purification yielded a compound 5… Show more

“…[15] Assay of hemolytic activity Hemolytic activity of the lead compound was determined as described by Saurav and Kannabiran. [16] Erythrocytes (RBCs) were separated from blood samples collected from human volunteers and used within 24 h. It was washed three times with sterile saline (0.85%) solution. The cells were centrifuged for 10 min at 8000 rpm, and the pellet was collected.…”

“…The cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity of 5-(2,4-dimethylbenzyl)pyrrolidin-2-one (DMBPO) extracted from marine Streptomyces VITSVK5 sp. from sediment samples collected from the Marakkanam coast, Bay of Bengal, India was studied (Saurav and Kannabiran, 2012). Anthracyclinones namely 4,6,11-trihydroxy-9-propyltetracene-5,12-dione and 10β-carbomethoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-4,6,7α,9α,11-pentahydroxy-9-propyltetracene-5,12-dione have cytotoxic activity against the HCT-8 human colon adenocarcinoma cell line, which were isolated from Micromonospora sp.…”

“…Among the microorganisms, actinobacteria was the most studied group because of their capacity to produce novel bioactive secondary metabolites, notably antibiotics (Blunt and Prinsep, 2006), anti-tumor agents, immunosuppressive agents (Mann, 2001) and enzymes (Berdy, 2005;Newman and Cragg, 2007;Strohl, 2004). They are also capable of producing clinically important alkaloids (Charan et al, 2004;Macherla et al, 2005;Cho et al, 2006), which have significant and reproducible inhibitory activity against human carcinoma cells (Saurav and Kannabiran, 2012). Marine alkaloids predominantly brominated or chlorinated ones have distinct features as compared to alkaloids from terrestrial sources (Rocha et al, 2005).…”
