Cytotoxic Constituents from the Vietnamese Fungus Xylaria schweinitzii

Abstract: Two new fungal pigments named schweinitzins A and B (1-2), together with (S)-torosachrysone-8-O-methyl ether (3) and emodin-6,8-di-O-methyl ether (4) have been isolated from the methanolic extract of the fruit bodies of Xylaria schweinitzii (Xylariaceae) collected in Cuc Phuong national park, Ninh Binh province, Vietnam, by silica gel column chromatography and preparative HPLC. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis such as IR, UV-Vis, 2D NMR and FT-ICR-MS. In addition, two compounds (1 and… Show more

“…Cultures of Xylariaceae either isolated as endophytes or derived from ascospores have proved to be an rich source for bioactive natural products. Among those are the insecticidal nodulisporic acids (Bills et al, 2012), the antifungal agents hypoxysordarin (Daferner et al, 1999) and sporothriolide , the cytotoxic schweinitzin A (Linh et al, 2014), antimalarial eremophilanes (Isaka et al, 2010), the protein kinase B inhibitor haloroquinone (Niu et al, 2012), the antibacterial hypocoprins (Jayanetti et al, 2014), and the antioxidative daldinan A (Lee et al, 2012).…”

“…Curtis. Compound 309 exhibited cytotoxicity against KB, Hep-G2, human lung adenocarcinoma (SK-Lu-1), and MCF-7 cell lines with IC 50 values of 0.72, 2.13, 2.32, and 4.09 μg/mL, respectively [ 107 ]. Two new polyketides, including 6-ethyl-8-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one ( 311 ) and 6-ethyl-7,8-dihydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one ( 312 ), were isolated from the fungus Xylaria sp.…”

“…Agglutinin from Paecilomyces japonica also exerts cytotoxic effects on human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells, human pancreas cancer AsPc-1 cells, and stomach cancer SNU-1 cells 162 . Pigments derived from Daldinia concentrica 163 and Xylaria schweinitzii 164 also present cytotoxicity against lung carcinoma SK-LU-I cells, hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells, epidermal carcinoma KB cells, and breast carcinoma MCF7 cells. Lectins derived from Hericium erinaceum 165 , Russula delica 166 , Russula lepida 167 , and laccase derived from Tricholoma mongolicum 168 can suppress the proliferation of HepG2 hepatoma cells and MCF7 breast cancer cells.…”
