Cytotoxic and Antifungal Activities of 5-Hydroxyramulosin, a Compound Produced by an Endophytic Fungus Isolated fromCinnamomum mollisimum

Abstract: An endophytic fungus isolated from the plant Cinnamomum mollissimum was investigated for the bioactivity of its metabolites. The fungus, similar to a Phoma sp., was cultured in potato dextrose broth for two weeks, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The crude extract obtained was fractionated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Both crude extract and fractions were assayed for cytotoxicity against P388 murine leukemic cells and inhibition of bacterial and fungal pathogens. The bioactive extract f… Show more

“…Correspondingly, an endophytic fungus similar to Phoma sp. isolated from Cinnamomum mollissimum offered potent cytotoxicity against murine leucemia cells (Santiago et al 2012). Also, the ethyl acetate extract of endophytic fungi isolated from P. crocatum and red alga Bostrychia tenella inhibited the growth of different tumour cell lines with IC 50 value of 37.43 (T47D) and 1 lg/mL (SF-295), respectively (Astuti et al 2014;de Felicio et al 2015).…”

“…Exploration of endophytic fungi have gained increased interest among scientist as these microorganisms produce biologically-active compounds with therapeutic values (Zhao et al, 2009;Santiago et al, 2012;do Nascimento et al, 2015;Richardson et al, 2015). Many of the compounds have been reported to produce bioactive compounds against various types of cancer cell lines (Chui et al, 2011;Zheng et al, 2013;Zhu et al, 2013;Chen et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2015 …”
