Introduction: Lymph nodes are a site for organized collections of lympho-reticular tissue and are pink gray bean shaped encapsulated organs. Lymphadenopathy is one of the most common clinical presentations of patients attending the outpatient department. Lymph nodes are among the commonly aspirated organs for diagnostic purposes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a clinical technique used to obtain cells, tissues and/or fluid through a thin needle attached with disposable syringe for the purpose of diagnosis of masses. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this study is to find out the frequency of lymphadenopathy, etiological factors and cyto-morphologial features in different age groups and incidence of various lymph node diseases on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and to analyze the utility and diagnostic importance of FNAC in lymph node diseases. Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out in Department of Pathology at GMERS Medical College, Sola-Ahmedabad, Gujarat a Tertiary Care Centre. A total of 268 patients of all age groups underwent FNAC of enlarged lymph nodes during this study period. Results: Tuberculous lymphadenitis was recorded as the most common presentation of lymphadenopathy in the cervical region. Male to female ratio is 1:1.13. Most common causes of lymphadenopathy in 11-40 years age group was tubercular lymphadenitis and metastatic carcinoma in patients >50 years of age. Conclusion: FNAC of lymph nodes is an excellent first line investigation to determine the nature of lesion. It is quick, safe, minimally invasive, and reliable and is readily accepted by the patient.

Background: Surgical fine needle aspiration cytology is most popular diagnostic aid in patients with lymphadenopathy.Methods: This one year observational study comprised of aspirate collected from lymph nodes of patients attending Mahamaya Rajkiya Allopathic Medical College and Hospital, Ambedkarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. Fine needle aspiration was performed in all the patients and slides were stained with H and E, PAP and Ziehl Neelsen stains. SPSS was used for data analysis. Fischer’s Exact test was applied.Results: Out of the 51 patients, the most common site of lymph node aspirated was cervical (72.5%). A higher proportion of cases were diagnosed as chronic nonspecific lymphadenitis (23.5%) followed by granulomatous abscess (23.5%), tubercular lymph node (21.6%) and reactive (17.6%). A significant association found between FNAC diagnosis and age was found (p≤ 0.05).Conclusions: FNAC is a simple and useful procedure in patients with lymphadenopathy.

Introduction:Lymph nodes are an integral component of the immune system and their enlargement is commonly noted in clinical practice in a wide spectrum of diseases, including infections like tuberculosis and malignancy. FNAC is an important diagnostic tool for rapid evaluation of mainly superficial lesions, especially of lymph nodes. It is cost effective, relatively less traumatic, and enables the pathologist to provide the clinician with a diagnosis in a very short time, and hence is ideal especially for OPD patients. Objectives: 1. To study the age and sex distribution of the patients of FNAC of peripheral lymph node. 2. To study the spectrum of diseases diagnosed on FNAC of peripheral lymph nodes. Methods: Cross-sectional hospital based Observational study. Total 50 patients who had superficial lymphadenopathy were included in this study. Male patients were 21 (42%) and Female patients were 29 (58%). FNAC was performed on this 50 patients. Diagnosis was made by light Microscopy. Result was tabulated and statistical analysis was done. Results: Male patients were 21 (42%) and Female patients were 29 (58%). 50 % patients were in the age group of 21 to 40 years. Reactive hyperplasia was 46% and Granulomatous lymphadenitis was 18%. Cervical lymph nodes were most commonly involved. Conclusion: FNAC is a simple, quick, low cost, minimally invasive and easy diagnostic procedure which is very much helpful in the diagnosis of diseases causing superficial lymphadenopathy in all age groups. Reactive hyperplasia of lymph node was the most common cytological diagnosis followed by Granulomatous lymphadenitis.
