BackgroundMeiotic abnormalities lead to morphological and genetic variations which caused not only to evolution but also intraspecific reproductive barriers. During present study of detailed meiotic course in dicotyledonous plants sampled from Indian cold deserts, various meiotic abnormalities have been detected. For this, the plant materials fixed in Carnoy’s fixative and studied detailed meiotic course by standard squash method in 1% acetocarmine.ResultsMeiotic abnormalities have been presently detected in 71 species which include multiple associations in diploids (Achillea millefolium L.), multivalents and univalents in polyploids (4 species), cytomixis (40 species), chromosome stickiness (20 species), nonsynchronous disjunction of bivalents (32 species), interbivalent connections (15 species), synaptic mutants (2 species), syncyte meiocytes (2 species), abnormal spindles (7 species), and fusion of pollen grains (1 species), laggards and chromatin bridges, hypo-, hyperploid PMCs, monads, dyads, triads, tetrads with micronuclei and polyads.ConclusionsConsequently, variable sized apparently fertile pollen grains and considerable amount of sterile pollen grains are resulted as end products which lead to different genetic constitution (aneuploids and polyploids) and curtailed sexual reproductive success in these species.

The present paper reviews research conducted on the cytogenetics of the plants of the Kashmir Himalaya. The review discloses that out of the total c.550 cytologically determined plants, there are c.190 genera and c.55 families of angiosperms. Among the cytologically determined species, c.50 species have been reported for the first time at global level along with varied chromosomal reports for c.110 species from the Kashmir Himalaya. The genus Jaeschkea has also been cytologically determined for the first time worldwide from the Kashmir Himalaya. The chromosome numbers in these species vary from 2n = 10 to 2n = 120 with frequency of 2n = 18 (13.73%), 2n = 16 (13.46%), 2n = 14 (7.96%) and 2n = 32 (7.41%). The reported base numbers of x = 7, x = 8, x = 9 are common ones. Most of the genera are polybasic, followed by monobasic and dibasics while tribasic taxa are least represented in the Kashmir Himalaya. New base numbers have been reported for Astragalus (x = 6), Cheiranthus (x = 6), Gypsophila (x = 13), Meconopsis (x = 7) and Saussurea (x = 18) from this region. In all, nearly 65% species are diploids and the rest (35%) are polyploids existing at various polyploid levels, with a preponderance of tetraploids. These plants depict significant level of intraspecific variability not only in chromosome numbers but also for meiotic behaviour and morphology. The knowledge of intraspecific variability of these species point out the existence of genetic diversities. Additionally, it has been observed that molecular marker studies are restricted to few plant species in the geographically diverse the Kashmir Himalaya.

The present study investigated the palynological diversity of highly medicinal Rare, Endangered, and Threatened (RET) plant species dwelling in higher altitudes of Western Himalaya, India. The pollen morphology of 32 plant species covering 29 genera, 23 families, and 18 orders of Angiosperms was analyzed by Light Microscopy (LM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The families of the studied plant species have been arranged and discussed following the evolutionary sequence as per the updated version of Angiosperm Phylogeny Group ІV. The studied pollen characters were found to be helpful in the delimitation of taxa at the species level. In the studied monocots, the species belonging to order Zingiberales, Asparagales, and Liliales followed the general trend of having primitive inaperturate to advance monosulcate pollen except for Alismatales which had inaperturate pollen and placed after the orders mentioned above in the APG ІV classification system. The pollen aperture of the eudicot group in the present study followed the evolutionary pattern from tricolpate to tricolporate and triporate, which corroborated previous reports. All the investigated species of both monocot and eudicot groups had monad pollen units suggesting their primitiveness on the evolutionary scale except for the Rhododendron companulatum (Ericales), having evolutionarily advanced tetrad arrangement. The current study found primitive exine ornamentation in Ranunculales to advance in Asterales, Lamiales, Gentianales, and Boraginales and confirms the results of the previous studies. The data on the pollen morphological features of the studied species generated in the present study will help understand these important high-altitude plant species' reproductive biology and conservation aspects.
