Meiotic abnormalities affect genetic constitution and pollen viability in dicots from Indian cold deserts

Abstract: BackgroundMeiotic abnormalities lead to morphological and genetic variations which caused not only to evolution but also intraspecific reproductive barriers. During present study of detailed meiotic course in dicotyledonous plants sampled from Indian cold deserts, various meiotic abnormalities have been detected. For this, the plant materials fixed in Carnoy’s fixative and studied detailed meiotic course by standard squash method in 1% acetocarmine.ResultsMeiotic abnormalities have been presently detected in 7… Show more

“…The above mentioned meiotic abnormalities were detected in many plant species [ 50 , 51 ]. They are considered to be related to some genetic [ 52 , 53 ] and/or environmental [ 54 , 55 , 56 ] factors. Such chromosomal disorders can result in sterility of gametes and low percentage of pollen viability [ 57 ].…”

“…The INM frequency estimated by means of squashed preparations combined with LM is highly varied among species and even within a species if this parameter is estimated by different authors. It can vary from <1 to 80-100% of male meiocytes in an anther (Li et al, 2009;Reis et al, 2016;Kaur and Singhal, 2019). Such high variation of the numbers makes them doubtful.…”

“…They suggest that the irregular chromosome pairing observed in the BC1 plants is one of the main reasons of the problem of fertility observed. Usually in plant species with normal genomes, homologous chromosomes tend to have high matching rate unlike the homoeologous chromosomes in hybrid plants derived from interspecific crosses (Kaur and Singhal 2019). Actually, an essential event in meiosis is the chromosome pairing, not only for the occurrence of recombination but also for the correct chromosome segregation.…”
