Cytomegalovirus (CMV) seroprevalence in pregnant women, bone marrow donors and adolescents in Germany, 1996–2010

Abstract: In Germany, studies on the IgG seroprevalence in pregnancy and in women of childbearing age are rare. Therefore, we retrospectively evaluated the CMV IgG seropositive rate in 40,324 pregnant women as well as in 31,093 female and male bone marrow donors over 15 consecutive years (1996-2010). Furthermore, the result of a study conducted in 1999 investigating 1,305 healthy adolescents with known ethnicity was included. The overall CMV IgG seroprevalence in pregnant women (15-50 years) was 42.3%. Age-dependent ana… Show more

“…A total of 51.4% of our deceased donor population was seropositive for CMV, which is representative of overall seroprevalence rates in Germany (14,15). In line with the results from samples from living individuals (6), we now show that qualitative results from CMV-specific T cell assays performed from deceased donors correlated with serological analysis of humoral antibodies, albeit to a variable extent.…”

“…Results of this study revealed similar results (76.3% in females vs. 72.0% in males). No gender-specific differences were recognized in German adolescents aged 13-16 years [32].…”

“…Studies on the prevalence of CMV in childbearing-aged, pregnant and parturient women showed seroprevalence rates of 42.3% in Germany [32], 49% in the United Kingdom [35], 56.3% in Finland [36], 57% in France [22], 62.4% in Poland [37] and 91.5%-97.3% in Turkey [24,38]. Regional differences in CMV seropositivity were observed in Norway (58.5%-72.1%) [23,39] and Belgium (30%-54%) [21,31].…”

“…nfection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) is extremely common, with a seroprevalence of 40 to 60% in adults and exceeding 90% in certain patient populations (1,2). Clinical manifestations following CMV infection may range from asymptomatic to mild disease in immunocompetent hosts to severe and sometimes fatal illness in immunocompromised patients.…”
