Cytokinins in developing fruits of Moringa pterigosperma Gaertn.

Abstract: The existence of cytokinins both as a free form and as a constituent of t‐RNA was investigated in young fruits of Moringa pterigosperma Gaertn. Purified methanol extract was separated into butanol insoluble and butanol soluble fractions. The cytokinin(s) in the butanol insoluble fraction was tentatively identified as zeatin nucleotide. The butanol soluble fraction contained cytokinins and was chromatographed on Sephadex LH‐20 with 35% ethanol. The two active fractions from LH‐20 column coincided with zeatin an… Show more

“…The cytokinins have been shown to be present in the fruit (Nagar et al, 1982). A new O-ethyl-4-(α-L-rhamnosyloxy) Purgative, applied as poultice to sores, rubbed on the temples for headaches, used for piles, fevers, sore throat, bronchitis, eye and ear infections, scurvy and catarrh; leaf juice is believed to control glucose levels, applied to reduce glandular swelling Rubefacient, vesicant and used to cure eye diseases and for the treatment of delirious patients, prevent enlargement of the spleen and formation of tuberculous glands of the neck, to destroy tumors and to heal ulcers.…”

“…The acetate stage of the ethanol extract gives the antihypertensive mixes thiocarbamate and isothiocyanate glycosides from Moringa pods [42]. Its fruits comprise the cytokinins [43], O-ethyl-4-(α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzyl carbamate. MO seeds, leaves, and roots were broken down and found to contain the glucosinolates and phenolics, and no anthocyanidins or proanthocyanidins were identified [38].…”

“…This is particularly noticeable when cell division and enlargement are occurring (Davey and Van Staden 1977). These levels again decrease when the food reserves have accumulated and the propagules mature (Miller 1967, Burrows and Carr 1970, Sandstedt 1974, Shindy and Smith 1975, Davey and Van Staden 1978, Hopping et al 1979, Nesting and Morris 1979, Nagar et al 1982,…”
