Cytokinin and Its Key Role to Enrich the Plant Nutrients and Growth Under Adverse Conditions-An Update

Abstract: Among the field crops, wheat is regarded as one of the most paramount cereal crops because it is widely grown, consumed as food across the world, and also known as the staple food for nearly 35 per cent of the world population. However, it is threatened by spot blotch disease causing considerable yield loss, with existing genotypes lacking the resistance and the necessary nutrients. Cytokinins (CKs) are key phytohormones that not only regulate the plant growth/development but also play an important role during… Show more

“…Multiple aspects of plant growth and development are regulated by the phytohormone cytokinin. A significant number of mutants have been created in the cytokinin signaling pathway, biosynthesis, and breakdown processes, which has resulted in the rapid advancement in the field of cytokinin ( Li et al, 2021 ; Prasad, 2022 ). According to research, cytokinins are important signaling molecules that trigger a range of plant stress responses.…”

“…This is surprising result since the high amount of fresh and dry mass were observed in the presence of the BAP. Interestingly, other authors report that the increase activity of cytokine dehydrogenase enzyme, which leads to cytokinin degradation, resulted in increment of some nutrients in leaves by the enhancement of root system and better scavenging of macro-and micronutrients, since cytokinin negatively regulate root growth (Nehnevajova et al 2019, Prasad 2022). In fact, by our results with melaleuca, roots in the culture media were only observed in the absence of BAP added to the culture media, which explain the higher accumulation of these nutrients in the tissues cultivated without this cytokinin.…”

“…The emerging picture is that the overarching effects of auxin action are aimed at an individual plant’s survival and well-being, whereas the overarching effect of cytokinin action is reproduction, as cytokinin ensures the maximal development of shoot organs and seed production ( Figure 1 ). There is compelling evidence that this antagonistic auxin/cytokinin control of shoot/root growth ratios is operational in all land plants, including monocots [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ] and primitive plants [ 3 ], for which the connection with nutritional status awaits further investigation.…”
