Cytokines in Semen of Normal Men and of Patients With Andrological Diseases

Abstract: Measurement of in particular IL-6 in semen may contribute to the diagnosis of inflammatory disease of the accessory sex glands (positive predictive value = 98%, sensitivity = 72%, specificity = 94%), but it is not relevant for the diagnosis of immunological disease.

“…LCS was associated with decreased sperm count, % normal forms and fructose concentration, a measure of seminal vesicle function. Thus, the present study confirms and extends earlier reports that STIs and LCS are associated with poor semen quality (7,13,45,48,49,51,64,65,70,(77)(78)(79)(80)(81)(82).…”

“…Similarly, concentrations of all three inflammation markers (PMNs, PMN-elastase and IL-1β) were significantly correlated with one another, which was expected, as both PMNs and macrophages are important participants in inflammatory responses, and because numbers of PMNs and macrophages in semen are highly correlated (9,45,48,49,86). STI DNA was not associated with elevations in any of these inflammation markers.…”

“…Certain proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8, are involved in inflammatory processes. Previous studies have investigated levels of seminal IL-6, IL-8, or both in infertile patients, and controversy exists as to whether elevated cytokine levels are related to semen quality (Comhaire et al, 1994;Dousset et al, 1997;EggertKruse et al, 2001;Kopa et al, 2005). To our knowledge, there has been no study in which levels of IL-6 and IL-8 have been measured in semen from males infected with C trachomatis and comparisons made with a group shown not to be infected with chlamydia.…”

“…Several authors did not ®nd any correlation between seminal cytokine concentrations and spermiogram parameters [10], reporting only a slight correlation between the expression of IL-6 and low sperm concentration [3,5]. Furthermore, Huleihel et al [16] reported that seminal concentration of IL-1, TNF-a, and IL-6 were not di erent in fertile and infertile men.…”
