Cytokeratin 20 Immunoreactivity in Renal Oncocytomas

Abstract: Cytokeratins (CKs) are a group of 20 antigenically distinct intermediate filaments, generally confined to epithelia and their neoplasms. Immunostaining for CKs, in particular coordinate staining for CK7 and CK20, has become a useful tool in diagnostic pathology. Although studies defining CK distribution in neoplasms identify 0--7.7% of renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) positive for CK20, none has described the incidence of CK20 immunopositivity in renal oncocytomas (ROs). Distinction between RCC and RO may be diffi… Show more

“…Interestingly, a recent brief report demonstrated 80% (12/15 cases) CK 20 positivity in renal oncocytomas (18). Their results appear contradictory to our findings of 0% (0/21 cases) CK 20 positivity in renal oncocytomas.…”

“…The CK 20 profile for chromophobe renal cell carcinomas has not previously been studied. A recent brief report on CK 20 staining in oncocytomas demonstrated 80% positivity with variable patterns and distributions (18). Consecutive paraffin sections were cut at 4 m and placed on poly-L-lysine slides.…”

“…A similar perinuclear staining pattern was also described earlier in oncocytomas positive for cytokeratin 20 staining, 36 and colloidal iron staining (as mentioned above). 27 Stopyra et al 40 hypothesized that such peculiar staining pattern corresponds to large cytoplasmic condensations of intermediate filaments or globular filamentous bodies, described so far only in pathological processes.…”

“…However, the results reported are, at least as far as the keratin expression profile of ROs is concerned, still limited and partly contradictory. For example, keratin 7 immunoreactivity has been detected in 8-100% [12,17,19,33,38] and keratin 20 in 0-80% of ROs [12,33,38]. Hence, we decided to apply a high throughput tissue microarray technique using 22 different mouse monoclonal antibodies to evaluate the keratin expression profiles…”
