Cytogenetic mapping of the Lethal hybrid rescue gene of Drosophila simulans.

Abstract: Hybrids not carrying Drosophila simulans X chromosome derived from the cross between D. melanogaster females and D. simulans males are lethal at the late third instar larval period or early pupal stage. This lethality can be rescued by the mutation Lethal hybrid rescue (Lhr) of D. simulans. The Lhr gene is considered to play an important role in reproductive isolation, but the genetic analyses have not been carried out extensively because of the lack of visible mutations and chromosome rearrangements in D. sim… Show more

“…The Lhr mutation was previously mapped between sd and jba (Yamamoto et al, 1997). The corresponding genes for sd and jba have not been identified in D. melanogaster and their position is cytologically uncertain.…”

“…While T. K. Watanabe and colleagues were surveying the invading population of the species in the late 1970s, Watanabe (1979) noticed that males of a strain from Kokura ‘rescued’ the inviable hybrid males when mated with D. melanogaster females. The rescue gene, Lethal hybrid rescue ( Lhr ), has been mapped in the right arm of the second chromosome by both genetical and cytological means (Watanabe 1979; Yamamoto et al 1997). The rescue effect of Lhr is not sex‐specific, because X m X m Y s females are also rescuable by this mutation (Takamura & Watanabe 1980).…”

“…Lhr 1 maps 1.7 centimorgans from the visible marker jba on chromosome 2R (17). We identified recombinants between Lhr 1 and jba and typed them using molecular markers that distinguish the Lhr 1 and jba D. simulans strains (Fig.…”
