Cytogenetic Characterization of Alouatta belzebul with Atypical Pelage Coloration

A comparative study of 13 blood genetic systems and pelage color variation was performed in four wild populations of Alouatta belzebul. The animals from the west bank of the Tocantins River showed less color variation than those from the east bank, as well as less than those from Tocantins Island. The blood genetic markers, however, revealed an opposite pattern of variation. A previously undescribed morphological variant (completely red) was observed in one specimen of the east bank, where pelage color of the local population varied from completely black to completely red. Levels of heterozygosity and inter- and intralocus variances for the blood systems are compared with those observed in five other species of New World primates.

Taxonomia e variação geográfica das espécies do gênero Alouatta Lacépède (Primates, Atelidae) no Brasil

Neste estudo analisou-se a variação geográfica e não-geográfica de táxons de bugios, gênero Alouatta Lacépède, 1799, que ocorrem no Brasil, com o objetivo de esclarecer a taxonomia do grupo. Para a análise morfológica, examinou-se um total de 1.286 espécimes mantidos em cinco museus brasileiros e dois norte-americanos. O material consistiu basicamente de peles, crânios e ossos hióides; esqueletos e espécimes preservados em via úmida foram escassos. O estudo se baseou na análise qualitativa dos complexos morfológicos em adição a 18 morfométicos do crânio e osso hióide. Antes das decisões taxonômicas, elaborou-se um estudo de variação geográfica, sexual, ontogenética e individual. Reconheceu-se 10 espécies de Alouatta ocorrendo no Brasil, sendo a maioria definida por caracteres discretos, porém diagnósticos. São elas: Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812), A. fusca (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812), A. clamitans Cabrera, 1940, A. belzebul (Linnaeus, 1766), A. discolor (Spix, 1823), A. ululata Elliot, 1912; A. juara (Linnaeus, 1766), A. macconnelli (Humboldt, 1812), A. puruensis Lönnberg, 1941 e A. nigerrima Lönnberg, 1941. Alouatta macconnelli e A. clamitans mostraram notável variação geográfica na coloração da pelagem e algumas variáveis morfométricas (polimorfismo) o que dificultou as definições e limites dos táxons. Alouatta belzebul apresentou variação em mosaico na coloração da pelagem. Alouatta ululata e A. puruensis foram definidas pela presença de dicromatismo sexual na pelagem, mas este caráter pode ser um artefato e necessita estudos adicionais para corroborar sua validade. Sinonimizou-se Alouatta belzebul mexianae Hagmann, 1908 com A. discolor; e a validade de Alouatta seniculus amazonica Lönnberg 1941, não foi considerada.

Understanding the relationship between Alouatta ululata and Alouatta belzebul (Primates: Atelidae) based on cytogenetics and molecular phylogeny

The genus Alouatta Lacépède 1799 comprises a group of neotropical primates distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. Ten species of Alouatta occur in Brazil, including Alouatta belzebul (Linnaeus, 1766) and A. ululata Elliot, 1912; this latter being considered a full species, subspecies or a junior synonymous of A. belzebul. In order to clarify the relationship of A. ululata with A. belzebul and infer their relationships with other Alouatta species, karyotype and mitochondrial DNA data were analyzed. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out with a 801 bp fragment of cytochrome b DNA of one A. ululata sample and 33 sequences of A. belzebul, A. caraya, A. fusca, A. nigerrima, A. seniculus, and A. macconnelli available in GenBank, with Brachyteles arachnoides as outgroup. The G-band karyotype of a male A. ululata showed a diploid number of 49, similar to the one reported for A. belzebul, with the same pattern of autosome heteromorphism, apparently resulting from a Y-autosome translocation. Maximum--likelihood and Bayesian analyses and median joining network did not show an internal structure among A. belzebul haplotypes and placed A. ululata haplotype within A. belzebul clade. Karyotypic and molecular analyses herein carried out did not allow the separation of A. ululata from A. belzebul. However, additional analysis with larger sample sizes may provide relevant information for this question.
